Apparently I'll be £68.10 worse off, not bad really.

Edit: or £160 better off if I earn what I expect to.

I don't have the proper figures to hand, but ballpark tells me we may be about £500 better off. :?

I think I need to get better figures together and try it again.

I still don't get the BBC's figures.

It puts me at getting £1066 child benefit & £411.50 tax credits.
We get approx. £18 a month child benefit. The tax credits are more or less correct.

Do you mean "a week"?
£18 a week would be £936 a year.

EDIT

CLICKY
£20.30 per week = £1056 per year

But ours dropped quite a lot recently.

Child benifit is fixed and not income based. It should be weekly.
Only tax credits or other benifits change.

That's handy to know. If only he ate & pooped less than £18 a weeks worth of stuff.

Yeah, the obvious consequence may be that a lot of high cost purchases - like major house items or cars or the like - get bought just before the increase rather than after. 2.5% extra on the cost of a pint of milk doesn't really matter. 2.5% on a 20 grand car, that's actually enough to care about.

Jon

Milk is zero rated but the principle is right. It will be unnoticed as it is close to the rate of inflation so will only be noticed overall but not on a day to day basis.

Hm, the well off paying more? According to the Guardian if you're single and earning £200K+ you'll be a whole £94 worse off...

Does that allow for the extra VAT on everything they spend that £200k on?
Even if they only spend 1/2, that's £100k, so that's £2500 extra VAT.

"The indications are that you will be £136.75 better off"

That's significant to me. It's basically a 10% increase in my disposable income which I can spend on luxury items, thus helping boost the economy... although, when VAT goes up it will nearly be wiped out...

I'm one of those who is more likely to buy a new TV this year before the VAT rise. I don't really need one so it's not certain, but I should be lucky enough to able to afford the £330 needed to upgrade my really rather good and only 6 years old Acer 26" 1280x768 with DVI to a Samsung 32" 1080p with HDMI, which would mean I could finally watch blue ray legally rather than being forced totally against my will to watch guilt ridden but HDCP free rips from the bay of men with parrots. £136 should buy me at least two of the really awful films that came out recently :D

*carefully counts the pennies in the monthly budget*

No, unemployment benefit! There is no job seekers allowance here. If you aren't actively looking for a job and you aren't signed off by a doctor as sick, you don't get your money.
