 | | | | Quote: Official approval has been given for the creation of an internet domain dedicated to pornography.
The board of net overseer Icann gave initial approval for the creation of the .xxx domain at its conference in Brussels.
Icann's approval will kick off a fast-track process to get the porn-only domain set up.
ICM Registry, which is backing the domain, said .xxx would make it easier to filter out inappropriate content.
The decision ends a long campaign by ICM Registry to win approval.
Stuart Lawley, chairman of ICM, welcomed the decision and said it was "great news for those that wish to consume, or avoid, adult content". Porn police
Icann, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, said the next step would be talks with ICM Registry to ensure that it still had sufficient backing from the adult industry to justify its creation.
Icann oversees the net's addressing system and demands that new top level domains, such as .biz, must be "sponsored" in that they must serve the needs of a defined community.
ICM has said it expected the first .xxx domains to go live in early 2011. It said it had more than 110,000 pre-reservations for .xxx domains.
During the debate on approval, Icann board members said mistakes had been made in denying approval before now.
The denial was "not consistent with the application of neutral, objective and fair documented policy".
Some board members said they were personally "uncomfortable" with the decision to approve .xxx but could not block it because ICM had followed Icann's rules for setting up a new top-level domain.
Initial approval for .xxx was given in 2005 but this was rescinded following protests from politically conservative groups. Icann also said it was worried that it would be asked to police content - a role it was not created for.
In February 2010, a panel of US judges said Icann erred in denying the approval of the domain. Icann accepted that ruling and began a public consulation process on whether the domain should be approved. | | | | |

This is a good idea, and if browsers could have an xxx domain filter then it would reduce the need for ISP's to filter so much.

It'll only work if they can force all the sex sites from .com to .xxx

It does not have to be all. Many will move over if they can get a better xxx domain than they have .com domain. Others will do so to stop losing their xxx equivalent domain. Plus who knows governments might give tax advantages to xxx domains? You are also ignoring the fact that many businesses would prefer the xxx domain.

What's to stop them using both? It's not as if .com domain names cost much to keep hold of.

And they probably will until they have all their traffic on the xxx domain.

It doesn't make business sense to just have a xxx domain when you know that it will be blocked left right and center, sex on .com will live on regardless. Its just another revenue creation scheme, covered up in the "lets protect the children" [LIFTED] message.

But in the future there may be legislation which restricts porn to .xxx

It's long over due. The industry wants it, and it's not going to cause any harm to anyone at all. Define porn. Some people might think page 3 is porn, in which case The Sun would have to be .xxx Sites like Maxim have a lot of clantily scad ladies. Would that be .xxx ? Not in my mind it wouldn't, but you can imagine some religious right wing types arguing otherwise. How about sites that link to sites which may contain porn? That would include this one! Such legislation would not only be daft, it would be unenforceable.

The advantage of the xxx domain is that it will make it easier for parents to block xxx content through their browser without resorting to cyber nannies, or ISP's without having to use blacklists.

Not if they're just duplicates of teh .com sites. The .com ones will still exist with all the same content.
