This news was in my local daily paper this morning, but I found it on t'Web.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1290118/Hospitals-ban-sugar-tea-machines-poses-health-risk.html

In the paper, it mentioned that it was all about choice and this makes it easier to choose a healthy option. Yeah, it is all about choice, and I'll choose to NOT have a cup of tea or coffee in an NHS centre, or choose to carry my own sugar around.

My local trust has already banned "unhealthy" drinks in its machines (not sure about other locations), so I go to the League of Friends (same sort of thing as WRVS) and buy my Coke from there. The "League" sells all sorts of "unhealthy" foods, and if they stopped selling them then people would stop buying and the staff and visitors would lose an excellent retail outlet and the hospital would lose a ton of charity money.

I have to pop this link in- That cup must be from a private hospital. http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/183436/Hospital-ban-on-sugar-in-patients-tea

This is back in 2006 so I dont know if it still happens but.....

Quote:
Burger King has four outlets in hospitals across England, including one at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, which treats thousands of heart patients each year. Other chains, such as Costa Coffee, are increasingly appearing in the place of old-style cafes in hospital foyers.

The three major hospitals in north Wales, all of which I visit in work, have a cafe facility and a shop; both run, as far as I can tell by volunteers.

I have been to several hospitals in England, however, which are like miniature shopping arcades and, although I haven't seen a Burger King, it wouldn't surprise me.

I agree that the hospitals should not promote unhealthy eating, and putting a Burger King in one is maybe a tad much, but to go so far as to ban sugar in tea and a cheese sandwich!

It's all about balance. My kids go to a school were certain foods are banned. I'd like to think, however, that we send them to school with a reasonably well balanced lunch box and that we balance any junk/treats that they eat with healthy foods as well.

We have already gotten rid of Labour and their nanny-state mentality, but it's going to take time for Camerclegg to sort out the mess- if they are so inclined.

Miserable beggers! If you're stuck in a hospital bed for weeks on end, the least they can do is let you have some sweeties now and again.

This would be me heading down the corridor, out of the hospital, across the road and into the local shops. And I'd like to see them try and stop me.

The quicker you get back, the quicker you get bored in hospital again.
