Bulletstorm developer, People Can Fly has questioned whether players actually give a monkey's about graphics any more.

Speaking to CVG, founder Adrian Chmielarz said he doesn't really care about video game visuals that much - so it's really lucky that his shooter looks fantastically good.

"The thing is, we really do not care that much," he said of game graphics. "When you take a look at the visual quality of Gears - the density of detail, so to speak - in my opinion, it kills Modern Warfare easily. But, Modern Warfare is 60 frames-per-second, and composition of the scene in Modern Warfare is really, really good. It's excellent.

"I think right now so long as the game has a minimum level of quality, which is for us and everyone who wants to matter in this business is really high, do players really care? Seriously, if it really looks good, do we need to join race?

He added: "If people say our game looks better than another game, we will be happy, but that's not our goal. We just want to invite you on an adventure."

Bulletstorm, in case you missed it, is a Cliff Bleszinski-produced shooter in which you can impale people on giant, spike wielding plants, slide kick bizarre-looking guards, and in which a man can exclaim, "You scared the dick off me!" when he feels like it.

Cliffy B recently stuck up a six minute walkthrough video of the game in action. Watch it.

I only care when the game has been on sale at full price and is below the minimum standard for today's games, though that's obviously subjective...

Not really. I have spent hours last night playing Syndicate on my iMac via DosBox/Boxer and the graphics on this dos game are pretty basic but it is so much fun.

I think it depends on the type/style of game.

Currently playing Red Dead Redemption and in the story mode, great graphics really help. Ditto with Batman: Arkham Asylum - the graphics help improve the atmosphere of the game.

In a game like COD: MW2 where most of the action is online, the graphics aren't as important - you're concentrating on finding the baddies. Anything that slows the game down ruins the gameplay.

I must admit that the eye candy that give the WOW factor is always pleasing. But once that wears off its the gameplay that stands up more than anything.

<yoda>graphics do not a game make hmmmm</yoda>

I agree, nice graphics are nice to look at as a novelty.

But soon they go unnoticed as the player gets absorbed into the game.

One example of this is GT5. Each track has been created with stunning realism even down the the 3D models of spectators watching and blossom falling off trees. But when you're flying up Beau Rivage at 180mph in an F1 car you're not going to notice if the curtains are drawn in the hotel window you're flying past.

Conversely to this though are action/adventure games like InFamous2 (see other thread for video). The gameplay footage makes the game look almost like a movie with faux cut-scenes taking place in the middle of the action where you have full control of everything going on. Add to the the exploratory nature of the game and finding a building roof that hasn't had a wall rendered properly so that it's see-through is going to ruin the illusion of the world in the game.

Yes graphics matter, it is a large part of what we are spending our £40 on. Of course, lazy developers would like to think that they don't matter so they can churn out any old junk.

(I have a low opinion of certain developers...Activision...Epic...)

I have to agree. Without gameplay the graphics will only distract you for so long.

You can't have one without the other, in my opinion.

A good game has good gameplay and good graphics.

If it has bad graphics and your mate asks you about it you'll probably say "it's a good game, but the graphics kinda ruin it"

True, it also helps with the immersion. If the game world looks like dog vomit, you're going to have a harder job getting engrossed in the story.

Fortunately for a lot of developers, they have console gamers to aim at - they're not the most discerning bunch, by and large.

I disagree to a point, great gameplay means you are so immersed you don't notice if the graphics aren't so good you get wet looking at them

Great graphics means nothing if the game is terrible to play. Just look at Bionic commando (the big game, not the arcade style one). Looked amazing but the gameplay was terrible.

Gameplay and story makes/breaks a game. Graphics just amplifies the effects of the opinion.

Its true - console gamers will buy pretty much anything. Modern Warfare 2 is a case in point. Massively popular on the 360 and its abysmal.

This ^.

Take Dragon Age Origins or The Witcher for example. The graphics are no way Crysis standard but DAO in particular has consumed the most time of my gaming since GTAIV.

Well that's your opinion.

Just because you don't like mass appeal games like MW2 doesn't mean console gamers are idiots.

There's nothing wrong with mass appeal games as long as they are actually good. Modern Warfare 1 was brilliant, but MW2 was little more than a cynical marketing exercise, very little substance and a "controversial" non-level to try whip up a media frenzy.
