he advertising watchdog has reprimanded an eBay seller for pulling the old trick of adding together processor speeds.

TheLaptopStore, which trades under the name of Dr-Computer-Biz on the auction site, advertised a computer as an "HP PC DUAL CORE 5.6GHZ 2GB 250GB XP DVD-RW COMPUTER THE ULTIMATE DUAL PROCESSOR 5.6GHZ PC COMPUTER SYSTEM".

I'm half surprised eBay hasn't said something before...The number of machines claiming to have very unrealistic CPU configurations is immense.

I can see that. He mentions dual core so why not use dual 2.8 Ghz rather than claim 5.6 Ghz. Plus aren't there 3.06 GHz dual core processors out there now which would no longer make it the fastest.

I'm surprised they've been able to get away with this for so long. You don't have 5.6Ghz of power you have 2x2.8Ghz. It's like trying to make out 2 Nissan Micras have the power of a Porsche.

Like this 5.6GHz beast?

Or this 11.6GHz ninja-pc-death-machine?

Anyone got an email address for the ASA ;)

Since my PC has 2 processors, both of which are dual core and run at 2.4GHz, could I advertise it as a 9.6GHz PC?

As I have a Core i7 920, does that mean I've got 10.68GHz, or with Hyperthreading- 21.36GHz?

On a dual Xeon 5500 here, 8-cores @ 2.26 = 18.08GHz. But it has hypterthreading, so 16-cores @ 2.26 = 36.16GHz 8-) 8-) 8-)

8 processors, 3GHz a piece. Woot! I have a 24GHz Mac!

As it’s 2x4 core processors, I refer to it as a V8 :-)

+1
Every time I see that on eBay I report it.
Nothing ever happens.

One eagle-eyed shopper quite rightly noticed that there's no such thing as a 5.6GHz PC processor, and that the company had misleadingly used the sum of the system's two 2.8GHz processors for its attention-grabbing ad.

That eagle-eyed shopper was me!

Got a letter from the ASA today. In a nutshell it says they upheld the complaint and "MegaPC" removed all listings and have agreed to stop adding the cores together. The ASA went on to say the reasoning i.e. cores shouldnt be added together to give an overall speed.

EBay won't police their own site so about time someone stepped in and did it for them.

We (the company I work for) have previously complained to eBay about sellers selling stolen goods and they have done nothing.

If I had my way I would shut them down as it seems a mecca for criminals.
