A Hong Kong company has released a handheld laser, which is actually fairly powerful. George Lucas isn't happy and has sent them a cease and desist order, because the laser device looks a lot like the hilt of a light sabre. Wicked Lasers' Pro Artic Laser is fairly powerful and, now that it has become popular, they have started packaging it differently - essentially they are now putting a difusing lens on the end, so that people won't hurt themselves when they first turn it on; you have to remove the lens to get the full, focused power. Techi.com clicky. I first heard about it on TNT (Tech news today over at TWiT.tv), about 22-23 minutes in, the story is actually very funny to listen to. Edit: Edit 2: From the website, no "it may cause" disclaimer: It will cause blindness, it will cause skin cancer, not a namby-pamby product!

It blatantly looks like a lightsaber in one of those pics on the website.
What the hell would you use ones of these for?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I agree, but the company making them have been very cunning in not ever comparing it to the light sabre themselves. Also, whilst it does look VERY similar, there are some noticeable differences (like the slanted end of the lightsabre, etc...)

The other thing is, if you need a hand held laser pointer, what would it look like, if it didn't resemble a light sabre? They both look like overblown torches, there are only so many shapes you can comfortably hold in your hand a point with...

Um..... surely if you are going to produce a hand-held laser, that is the best shape for it, purely from a design point of view?

Maybe they should redesign it to look like captain Kirk's phaser.

Anglers would use it to scare water fowl from the lakes and ponds, though a true Jedi would use the force, then if lazy Force Lightening for the actual fishing, to stun them of course.

One of my eyes is worserer than the other one - I suspect it may something to do with being zapped by a friends laser when I was an adolescent. Geeks, technology and bench mounted lasers (his brother was getting into holography) and mirrors are fun, but yes, be careful.

I could use one at work for cutting open sacks. (We're not allowed Stanley Knives any more.)
