What do you use? Plastic scissors? They're so crap I actually injured myself on a pair once while trying to cut a piece of paper. They won't cut anything, but when they snap under the strain you can stab yourself quite badly. I was six and a half. I've never quite recovered from the trauma

We have these crappy safety knives with the blade hidden in a curved section. They're a real pain and nowhere near as effective.
They look a bit like this:

Is there an actual reason you've been relegated to using this rubbish or did someone in the H&S department just decide it was so on a whim?

Tesco and Sainsbury (I can't speak for others) have been using similar devices since at least the mid 80s to open packaging. One of the main reasons is, the blade, being inside a plastic casing, with a "feeder" slit, can only cut the plastic packaging that you are running it over, there is practically no chance of a shop floor worker cutting into plastic bottles, cloth etc.

Ours were more primitive, a rectangle of plastic, that you pushed over the case, this hand-grip style with pull seems much more practical.

Yes very safe, but not the fun of a light sabre though. ;)

It's certainly a step in the right direction.
Now they just need to figure out a way to arc the beam back after about 3' of leaving the handle, but this design is looking very promising as a first step towards having a fully functional Lightsaber.

And don't forget the noise that they make as well when you wave them about. ;)

That can come after the product is 100%. Get the 'blade' working proper first, the rest will come later.

Or you could make the noise yourself until then.
