The reason I won't be upgrading is that, from what I've read, Microsoft seem intent on making their OS as similar to the iPhone OS as possible, but unfortunately they are kinda killing it in the process.

Assuming it has support for the actual hardware you could do that. Me, I wouldn't be running a hacked pirate ROM on my phone. Seems an emintently unsensible thing to do, especially on a what is effectively a v 1.0 product. Personally, I like my phone to be somewhat reliable.

I have never upgraded a phone OS. Just no need to. I wonder if I will bother once I have the iPhone? Unless there is a real benefit then why do it?

My budget is yet to bring me into possession-of-a-phone-good-enough-to-warrant-an-OS-land.

Generally speaking with the iPhone, if you're syncing it regularly it will nag you to upgdate whether you like it to or not .

I'd agree generally with 'normal' phones there's little point to upgrading the firmware. However smartphones are different. Because they are basically small computers, the scope for improvement purely in software is much greater. Look at Android - the stories are 2.2 is a significant (i.e. more than 100%) improvement in the speed of the interface over 2.1. iOS 4 gives you useful new features like folders for apps, even if you have an older generation phone. And at the end of the day it's free, it probably will add useful stuff and it's pretty much 'push the button and come back in 10 minutes' at least on the iPhone and recent Android phones, so why wouldn't you do it?

Yes but my current phone is a smartphone but it has never needed an upgrade. I can fully understand the benefits of the iPhone iOS4 upgrade. It makes a lot of sense if your phone can handle the changes. As you say the folders is one very good reason for the change. I already have more than 120 iPhone apps before I have an iPhone and will need to make use to the folders to get them all on the phone.

I couldn't justify spending more than £40 on a phone

Former WM 6.1/6.5 now on Android 2.1 with my Samsung Galaxy S

The Samsung UI is pretty pants compared to something like SPB or Sense (in that you can only add certain things to the pages, no quick view etc) but the rest of it is very nice, been watching some 720p videos on it today with absolutely no lag at all or re-encoding needed on the avi files

I think closing the unofficial 3rd party dev will hurt WP7 greatly, the draw for me was the ability to develop and distribute for free to establish my name as a developer.

Having owned an iPhone 2g and owning an iPod touch now, I think Android is the best out of all of them in terms of speed, functionality and how customisable it is, things like adding a contact to the home page for quick access is easy

Blackberry for me. My first Blackberry,had the Bold 9700 a couple of weeks and i'm very impressed. The Blackberry Mac desktop manager syncs flawlessly.

If you plan to hold on to it for a while then even an iPhone becomes a good deal. My last phone cost £235 plus contract, but that averages out to less than £50 considering the time I have had it. I plan on getting an iPhone 4 it will set me back £299 but again I doubt whether I will change it too often and even if I did it might actually be worth reselling for a new one and the cost might be less than £100 per year.
