My iMac has slowed down a lot lately, it seems to struggle to open iTunes, iPhoto and Firefox, opening Office is a pain and it can't keep up with typing.
Once Firefox has loaded, it seems okay, not sparking, but fast enough.
Is Snow Leopard really getting so bloated, or is it likely to be something wrong? I bought it with Tiger and upgraded to Leopard and then SL, is it time to do a complete re-install of Snow Leopard or is there something I can do to improve performance? (I've run Onyx over the machine).

No it it must be something else. Snow Leopard is improvement. You might consider backing up and reinstalling.

What's your free hard drive space like on your startup volume? Do you have any items loading at login that shouldn't be there? Are there any peripherals that could be misbehaving during the startup procedure (I'm specifically thinking printers and scanners but anything attached could be causing a problem). How does Disk Utility report the health of the drive? Does the machine shut down correctly?
Just a few things to consider before doing a fresh install.

137GB from 250GB free. Not that I am aware of... Nope, a WD MyBook for TimeMachine, an Apple keyboard, MS mouse and my iPhone... "The volume Beatrice HD appears to be OK." Yes.

Have you tried any disk utilities? You never know it could be a permissions problem. I literally run through every test possible to eliminate every possible problem.

try turning spotlight off system preferences > personal > spotlight untick all the search options then place the system HDD into the privacy section
see if that gives any improvement …

Have you got the WD disk utilities installed? I've got a WD drive and they gave me no end of trouble. All they did was allow me to change the readout on the e-ink display so I uninstalled them and everything was fine again.

There are no WD utilities and no display...
I'll try a repair.

Sorry but LOL, this could so easily be a Windows thread if you changed a couple of proper nouns here and there Actually apart from the OS, just the one: Spotlight -> Indexing I would check MyBook - how does it connect exactly? Mine is as slow as a dog under Windows, and slow network drives can have bad side effects.

It is an original 250GB USB one. Replaced it with a 1TB USB drive this week (also a 1TB E-SATA drive on my Sony notebook). It took hours to restore the iMac, because of the crippled USB 2.0 interfaces on early Intel iMacs! Restoring the same data onto my Sony took around 12 minutes!

I've had a couple of sluggishness issues lately. Repairing permissions helped, it didn't cure it, but it is certainly more sprightly now.

I've not had any trouble - except for Chrome. I should probably reinstall it at some point.

You should probably sell it to me and buy a 27" iMac. That'll cure it.

Hmm, tempting, but I bought a Sony Vaio laptop a week before I got my redundancy notice! The first part might happen, but the second part is very unlikely, unless something crops up soon...

Have you used Activity Monitor? you can see all running processes and the amount of cpu use as a percentage. Quite useful in these situations.
