 | | | | Quote: UK supermarket Sainsbury's has called on video games publishers to drop the price of their product.
MCV reports that Sainsbury's made it clear its entertainment conference last week that it would not continue to take a hit on the cost of cutting games RRPs.
Non-food MD for Sainsbury's, Luke Jensen, said that the firm would not continue to "bleed margin" on the industry's behalf forever.
"This is a journey we need to take together, and if it's not one we take together, it's a journey that won't happen," he said.
"I've heard people in the entertainment industry complain about the fact that prices are being driven down, but the fact is that what is happening is happening. The customers are leading the charge, we have to follow."
Kim Bayley, director general of the ERA added that the way consumers value entertainment has changed, and both retailers and publishers should share the effect of these changing expectations.
"Retailers need to offer their products at a value which consumers are prepared to pay. Consumers tell retailers consistently that they don't always value entertainment in the same way as they have done historically. It is only natural that the effect of these pricing expectations should be shared between retailer and supplier."
Speaking to MCV, an unnamed publisher criticised Sainsbury's for trying to devalue the industry and place it in the same position as DVD and music.
"I don't understand the logic of Sainsbury's wanting publishers to de-value their titles and to follow the path of DVD and music," they added.
"The grocers played a key part in destroying value in these categories, and I can't believe they would even have the cheek to suggest that we should want to follow suit to drive their share ambitions."
"Consumers have benefited from prices that haven't moved upwards while the experience has increased and the production costs have escalated.
"It seems to me that any call for downward movement in publisher pricing is misdirected." | | | | |

If you want cheap games buy a PC. Yes, console games are expensive, but people do buy the consoles at less than cost so the "console tax" is the only fair way to do it.

This. Personally all my PC games I get a few months down the line, never pay more than £10-£15 which I think is perfectly reasonable. As for PS3 games I do the same (just got ACII with all the DLC for £17) and any others I get 2nd hand as they've always been in perfect condition. Again, that pricing is fine with me. Any brand spanking newly released games I tend to just put on birthday or Christams lists.

Hmm, confusion between price and value here. I'd say a DVD is worth £5 or so, but the sellers want to get away with charging £20. Sainsbury's don't want to charge the full price for games because they just take up shelf space whilst potential customers go past muttering "Haha. Yeah, right!"
I should probably light the touchpaper and mention piracy here... I personally don't and haven't (I mean, have you seen some of the prices on Steam? I've now got many weeks' worth of games still to play, all for a pittance) but I can understand why a lot of people decide to.

Err, don't sell the games anymore. Otherwise don't say that you're trying to change things for the benefit of the cutomer. Perhaps they ought to think how the dairy farmers are treated. Tw@t.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

There are very few games that are worth paying the full price. Red Dead Redemption imo was worth the cash. Batman Arkham Asylum was worth the money (though not the collectors edition!). I go Assassin's Creed 2 secondhand for £15. Never played the first one and the second one isn't all that good.
If all games were worth their RRP, I'd disagree with Sainsburys. However there are a lot of crap games for which the RRP is laughable.

I am the same, never more than a £5 for a DVD less if possible. Games for mac I will pay full price but then I only get a handful and they last me for years. I am still playing Civilisation 4, Rise of nations and they are at least three years old. Console games I buy second hand, as they are still playable and less than a tenner. I must admit that I do walk down the aisles and laugh at the prices, especially for DVDs. Most are only really worth £2 at most.

Sainsbury's don't sell cheap games anyway! Amazon FTW.
Annoyingly sometimes buying a game on console is the only way to avoid awful DRM and online activation (effectively tying you to the product forever, no selling it etc). Which is [LIFTED].

I got ACII on PS3 because of their daft idea that you had to be constantly online to play it. I think they've since patched it so you don#t have to be but still, I want to feel like I own the game, can save as and when I like and play it as and when I like.

That is stupid. The average console might not even be connected to the internet. I have never connected either of my two consoles.

No, that's why I got it on PS3. It's the PC version that has the daft DRM system. I missed that bit out.

I have games that insist on the game CD being in the CD drive but that is about it. I can live with that.
