My parents raised us with far less than that. Then again, my mother worked from home so she could look after us.

I think that child care is the biggest single cost. If you can get around that somehow it is much more manageable. If your mum worked from home that would do it.

Perhaps people should think about cost before they have kids.

Yes but that is a huge downer on spontaneous sex. "Would you like to come upstairs to face being financially drained for the rest of your life? "

Bull! I don't spend anywhere near that much on mine, and it's not like he hasn't got everything he needs.

What about those for whom circumstances have suddenly changed? Bet you would encourage shooting the babies! Once we were all of school age, my mother started working more. This was great for income wise. However things at work changed and she wasn't able to pick us up from school. Hence it fell to grandparents, or sometimes the neighbour, to pick us up. Again this stopped once we were at secondary school.

Child care is going to be a biggy for a few years, maybe upto £500 a month.

Aaron's at the cheapest nursary in the area & it costs £590 a month for 3 days a week. Add to that the 2 days a week my wife is off work to look after him & it's way over £800 a month to have a child. Not complaining but with the cost of childcare it's no wonder people can't afford to go back to work (or have children)

Sounds like child care is a good business to get into.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Then again, surely location comes into it? Having had a quick look, the preschool my Mum used to work at would cost a parent £432/month. And it's one of the more expensive preschools in the area, or so I'm lead to believe.

Erm, nah. It's more of a general rule of thumb but general rules don't apply to all, no matter how much our scociety wants them to nowadays. £800 a month, my arse. None of my kids with friends spend that much.

Especially since service prices go up far faster than for goods. You would also have the user over a barrel if you wanted to raise rates.
