Well, [LIFTED]! You know that stuff that always happens to other people - well, it just happened to me. Time Capsule 's as dead as a dead thing this morning - was working fine yesterday, but now won't power up, doesn't show any lights, nuthin'. Long out of warranty (of course) and full of Time Machine backups, movies, TV shows etc.. etc.. I'm sure I can pull the drive to get at the data, but (assuming it's the usual power supply gone bad and not worth repairing) what to replace it with? Despite the obvious drawbacks, I do like the 'one-box' simplicity of the TC, but naturally have a few reservations; they're not the cheapest NAS out there, and start to get positively pricey if they die every couple of years...
So, does anyone have any recommendations for a NAS that's as simple to set up as a TC, but that can also share printers, USB drives etc... or are the newer TCs a better bet these days as they have 'eco' drives in them, so tend to run cooler??
As always, any and all help / opinions much appreciated.
Cheers, Pete

Unlucky with this. When you open up the thing, could you tell me if the PSU is Apple branded?
I recently bought a refurb, and when I opened it up the HDD was Apple branded, but the PSU wasn't! I'm hoping that this means my unit's PSU failed previously and was replaced with an alternative!

Soz I'm on tapatalk and can't edit posts! Forgot to say - check the other boards for recommendations, there have been lots of similar threads in the PC Hardware board, try a search.

Didn't think of the PC Hardware boards - duh! Thanks! Haven't cracked the case yet but I'll keep you posted re. the PSU. Cheers, Pete

If you can get the drive out (sorry, never used a TC), you'll likely be able to put it into a caddy and use it that way. You can pick one up for around £30 but check what sort of drive it is, whether it is SATA or IDE, 2.5" or 3.5".

If it's a 1st gen one with a 500gb drive and you can get to one, try taking it to an apple shop. Those models have a known issue with the PSU and they replaced mine without querying the warranty at all.

Cheers guys. Pulled the drive out earlier today and it's in a caddy as we speak, copying across to a new TC; I didn't want to fanny about too much as I have a ton of work on at the mo, so just went for a straight replacement, and the Mrs was going conveniently close to my local Apple store today.
The PSU is an Apple one in the old 500Gb TC, so is the likely culprit; this was an ex-demo unit I picked up cheaply, so I'm not too bothered about replacing it as a warranty claim, but it might well be worth talking to Apple about it at some time - can't hurt, can it?
Thanks again, Pete

Check the Apple website against the serial number of your Time Capsule - they've just recalled a batch or two...apparently they die after 18 months to 2 years.

Thanks. I saw SASPRO's thread in TMP but thought mine was older than those affected - turns out not to be, so it's got to be worth a phone call...
Cheers, Pete
