The Taser stun guns used by officers attempting to stop gunman Raoul Moat from killing himself did not have Home Office approval, it has emerged.

Who cares?
I can't believe the police are getting this much stick from the media just because that thuggish pillock chose to shoot himself.

Well if it was the Taser that caused Moat to shoot himself then not only is that involuntary manslaughter for the Officer involved, but a force could be facing a large payout too.

I thought the autopsy found that they missed, ie no Taser puncture wounds.

A Home Office spokesman said the XREP Tasers were "currently subject to testing by the HOSDB (Home Office Scientific Development Branch)".
He added: "However, legally, police forces have discretion to use any equipment they see fit as long as the use of force is lawful, reasonable and proportionate.

Move along, nothing to see here.

Not necessarily. It will depend on the history of the device, and whether the outcome could have been predicted.

Exactly. Why is this guy being treated as if he was a folk hero? There's even people leaving flowers and tributes where he died. Christ! I bet they'll all be on the Jeremy Kyle Show saying what a wonderful man he was and how they're traumatised by the police executing a good man.

To whom? Hopefully not the weasel brother who condemned the police and later admitted he hadn't been in touch with Raoul Moat anyway. Maybe to Paul Gascoigne whose drunken attempts to speak to Moat show that he definitely needs to buy a brain transplant.

Not unless he thought it was a widget in a can of beer.

The XREP Tasers used are still undergoing tests however the government has said forces have discretion to use any equipment they deem necessary.
So they were allowed to use them then. Problem solved.

Thank the lord! I was begginning to think you'd all gone mad.

He killed people, the police went out to find him, they tried to stop him shooting himself, but oh well, he didn't.

How much would you care whether the tasers were approved if he'd shot your parents, or spouse?

It was an incredibly odd sequence of events, consisting of:

1 - Three shootings by Moat resulting in one death and two seriously injured by a mentally unstable ex con who can't accept that his ex girlfriend us seeing someone else

2 - Declaring war on the police

3 - Writing a letter which ran to over 40 pages which could be summarised thus: "you'll never take me alive"

4 - A whole town practically closed and patrolled by armed police

5 - RAF fighter jets scrambled to help in the man hunt

6 - The unexpected appearance if a jaded old sportsman

7 - A final stand off ending in a suicide where Moat shot himself in the neck, missing his head by mere inches

The whole thing would make a cracking film.

Can I suggest Mel Gibson for the role? He is current going method for the role. :D
