"The internet has not become the great leveller that it was once thought it could be," according to Harvard academic Ethan Zuckerman.

Mr Zuckerman was speaking at the TED Global (Technology Entertainment and Design) conference in Oxford.

He said that the web was now contrary to the original utopian vision and users focused on information from a handful of wealthy countries.

"It's making us 'imaginary cosmopolitans'," he told delegates.

I personally get more info from different sources than ever before, but lets be honest, who has the time or inclination to go 'exploring' really? (me included)

Also, the world's always gone down the tribe route...

I get my info from a wider range of sources, though they must be in english for me to read. I always had wide reading sources so it has not been a sea change for me. I have a couple of sites that allow me to explore a little further afield but unless the headline appeals I go past.

Yes always beats finding it under bushes which used to be the old way for teenagers.

I read more that I ever did before, but then again I may have done as I got older anyway, without the internet. Actually, I think the 'net has enabled me to find more random facts, while generally narrowing the amount of news/information I take in. I don't know what is happening in the greater world, I know what is happening in the computer/tech industry. Things like the Haiti earthquake I didn't hear about until tech sites started reporting about it.

I think the 'net has been 'contaminated' too. Once upon a time it was a network of universities and military bases built on trust. Today nobody trusts anybody if they know what's good for them. We still have technologies from those "I trust you" days, things like SMTP which doesn't do authentication (you can add it on, but it's not a default or part of the standard) because once we trusted each other to use it properly...
We can't do anything about this, unfortunately :(

I wonder if that still happens, and if it does will it be on a disc.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

If they are on discs won't they be found on trains now? ;)
