We'll see how it goes, but I'd expect that to be the norm

I think that this might be a huge factor

Bryan Appleyard wrote a superb piece about the resurgence of film photography in the Sunday Times. I'd love to have shared it with you all, but meh...

Reading the article it looks like there may be a further test when the 30 days access for £1 introductory offer runs out.

What is interesting is that more people would buy an app on a device such as an iPad and subscribe to the content that way than use a web site with a pay wall.

That was my first thought. When that expires it might plummet again. I think that the concept might be valid but the price is what will kill the scheme over all. The Times has Times plus scheme costing £50 a year which comes with benefits. My cousin asked me about it when he read that they were giving away free cinema tickets, only to Times plus subscribers. I think that it might appeal to a small niche but the iPad could be a game changer. Once they have solved he subscription issues it could be a real boon to them.

Why do I get the feeling that this isn't a problem for Murdoch? Pick a number, any number, say 100. They had 100 readers paying nothing, now they have 33 paying a pound each. They're 33 quid up!

Of course no-one knows how this will affect revenues from advertising. Reduced readership = reduced revenues.

This will have two effects. One is the better quality of readers so pushing ad rates up. Though the other is the sheer drop off in readers which pushes down revenue. I personally think that the drop is more than going to offset the increase in rate because of the quality of subscribers. Though that does not preclude Murdoch selling the list of subscribers to others.

By "quality of subscribers" I assume you mean "people who are known to surrender money to teh internetz".
