Apple iOS 4 update crashing iPhones

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/359584/appl ... ng-iphones

Quote:
Apple’s iPhone woes seem to be never ending, with users now complaining about failures downloading and installing the operating system update that was released to remedy reception perception issues.

Apple last week released iOS 4.0.1 to address the signal strength display on the iPhone, but some users have reported running into problems updating their handsets, with complaints flooding support forums.

PC Pro reader Richard Bray was one such consumer, reporting that after downloading iOS 4.0.1 his phone crashed and was non-responsive to reboots.

Bray, who runs his own software company, says the issue has now been resolved, but he was temporarily without a phone and described the situation as a “fiasco”.

“Everything was fine. My iPhone 4 was working perfectly and I had the very latest version of iTunes installed on my Windows 7 PC and communicating fine with the iPhone,” he said.

“Then iTunes advised me to upgrade to 4.0.1 and I accepted. It downloaded the firmware and started to upgrade the phone, but then my PC came up with a message saying that the installation had failed and my iPhone was completely useless - I was phoneless.”

There's his problem.
If his iPhone was working perfectly and he checked to see what the update actually did then he shouldn't have accepted.
My iPhone4 is working perfectly, I checked what the update does, and I haven't upgraded the software, because my handset doesn't have the problems the software fixes, so what's the point?
And this guy runs his own software company?!?

I am still keeping my old P910i as a back up.

Even so I do not have any of these problems yet, maybe next month when the white ones become available it will be another matter.

why not, shouldnt it "just work" ;) , shouldnt the consumer have the expectation that it will cause no problems. Haven't Apple spend billions in advertising saying they dont have all these problems with their products?

Any firmware update of any sort has a small chance of going wrong and damaging the device. Every time Microsoft or Sony update the firmware on the Xbox 360 or PS3, you see forum threads claiming the update has 'bricked' their console therefore Sony/MS are incompetent idiots and why didn't they test it properly and surely with all their money and resources sure this simply shouldn't happen and I'm going to sue!

Every. Single. Time.

There are apparently now 3 million iPhone 4s in people's hands. Even if the upgrade goes perfectly well 99.99 percent of the time, that still means 3,000 people will get their phones bricked (assuming I've got my zeros right). And NASA would be happy with a .01% failure rate on most of their kit, let alone consumer electronics firmware updates sent across the vague and patchy internet and though any number of different PC/Mac configurations with different USB hardware.

My upgrade has cost me nothing thanks to the sale of my previous phone.
So far no signal issues, but then again I havent made any calls yet  (though I did notice it was showing less of a signal than the 3GS (for the 10 minutes both sims were active)
I can say the screen is fantastic, I was sceptical about all the guff that was being said about the "Retina" screen but by jimminy cricket its nice apart fom that is running shweeeet.

Yeah, almost 50% of my upgrade was covered by the sale of my previous iPhone. I wouldn't've upgraded without it.
The display is a beautiful screen isn't it.
