Quote:
The tourism touts, in Russia's southern Krasnodar region, carried out the stunt in an attempt to get beachgoers to follow in the donkey's footsteps and pay to enjoy a similar parachute ride.
However, the publicity gimmick, which lasted half an hour, turned sour when the donkey began screaming in distress. Children watching from the beach started to cry, and news of the tasteless incident reached local police. To make matters worse, the donkey had less than a soft landing and was dragged several feet over the surface of the Sea of Azov before being hauled on to the beach half-alive.
"The donkey was screaming, and children were crying yet nobody had the brains to call the police," said Larisa Tuchkova, a local police spokeswoman. Instead, most beachgoers filmed the bizarre flight on their mobile phones and later tried to sell the footage to local newspapers. Some beach goers did try to intervene. As the donkey soared more than 100ft above their heads, several people told the touts to "stop torturing" the animal but their requests were ignored.
According to local reports, children watching the spectacle asked their parents "Why did they tie a doggy to a parachute."
Police say they are now investigating whether the group of entrepreneurs responsible for the prank were guilty of animal cruelty. They could be jailed for up to two years if found guilty of such charges. It is not known whether the donkey survived its ordeal.

Simply appalling.

Appalling, yes.

However, setting aside all decent respect for the animal suffering and the traumatised kids, surely you have to admit that after a few vodkas sat in the sun on a beach with donkeys and parachutes it probably seemed like an irresistibly lol worthy venture of epic proportion?

I don't think any thing makes it appropriate to put a donkey in a paragliding harness. Drink or not. Don't forget we did not see the part with the donkey screaming. If you had seen that I think that you would agree that it was simply abuse of the donkey.

I didn't say it was appropriate. I said it was appalling.

That obviously didn't stop it seeming like "a good idea at the time".

That doesn't stop it being LOL in an OMG face-palm "how exactly did they expect that to end" kinda way.

Did you never do anything for the lols which ended in horrific injuries and lots of people lecturing you on how stupid and cruel it was? If not, I suspect you were never on a beach with a bottle of vodka in charge of donkeys and paragliding.

No matter how drunk I have got, and I love my drink, and I have never considered anything like that. It is a serious face palm moment. I have done things that have resulted in serious injury but I would never consider doing anything to an animal for laughs. Even if I was on a beach with vodka and donkeys I would still not consider getting them to paraglide.

Fair enough. I like to think I wouldn't actually do it, but I'm pretty sure it would come up for discussion given long enough in the sun.

The problem is that booze on a beach has appalling side effects, combined with the sum it dehydrates you like nothing else. I am a dull holiday maker. On sunny beaches I avoid the sun and drink non alcoholic drinks. Though russians have an appalling attitude to animal welfare at the best of times. So hardly unexpected.

In Moscow, 95 people have drowned in the river this summer, mainly due to high consumption of Vodka, before going swimming or performing other water based activities...

Some Darwin contenders there.

Whether it survived or not I bet it landed on its ass.
