I can the iOS being a layer, or module (like Classic was) in OS X, but it's not going to fly for those of us that make a living with the OS.
Final Cut & Motion running in iOS? Aperture/Lightroom?
Maybe I'm wrong. But it does make sense to smooth the transition between mobile and static OS's, incorporating elements of both.

I like the idea of the trackpad. Initially I think I'd use it in conjunction with a mouse, but then over time I'd probably use the mouse less and less.
Since I started using a Mac four years ago I gave up the right click and focused on learning more and more keyboard shortcuts, I rarely need to go through menus for anything other than obscure features.

As to the whole iOS thing. I can see the desktop becoming simplified in the future, my Mum doesn't need to know what a file system is and, IMO, should be allowed to manage files at all, I can see more applications using the iPhoto/iTunes type of management (they manage all of your files and present them to you in an interface that makes sense for that kind of file, those files can also be used in other products such as iMovie, etc). As long as a standard model was created, all applications could work together without the use ever needing to see a 'file'. Great for my Mum, not so great for me...

No, I thought I would, but the mouse is well laid out :D

Does you laptop have a physical button, Heather, or is it one of the ones that doesn't?

Mine is old enough still to have the physical button. It does support the two-fingered scroll, though.

Nooooo! I didn't know they'd got rid of the real button! I like using my touchpad with two-fingered scrolling (semi-multi-touch, I guess), but I have the tap-to-click bit turned off. I don't like that! Damn! I was thinking an 13" MBP in a year may be jolly nice. Bugger.

The whole trackpad is a massive button (you can press it down and it clicks).

Having used the trackpad on my brothers MacBook I can't say I'll be rushing out to get one of these (even assuming I had a Mac capable of running it in the first place :? ). I'll stick with a proper USB keyboard and mouse/trackball for as long as I possibly can.

Oh ok! So it is still a physical, mechanical button, just not seperate from the trackpad. Not sure what I'll think about that. Hmmm.

Go to an Apple store or outlet and have a play with one to find out.

Yeah, if you're still wanting to hold the button down with your thumb, say, and scroll with your finger you can still do that.

I have a macbook pro with the big buttonless trackpad and whilst it did take a bit of getting used to, it feels quite natural now and using my wife's HP laptop just feels wrong. The gestures are very handy and the two finger scrolling is really useful. The 4-finger Expose gesture is quite cool too.

As for whether I'd get this trackpad - I don't know, I prefer to use a mouse in Aperture, although the trackpad is fine for internet use.

I think that it depends on your needs, and how you work. I think it might be worth having a hands on and trying it out.

I'm struggling to come up with anything that you'd still need a mouse for other than perhaps playing a game.
Can you clue me in?
a back button? i cant imagine web browsing without one of those.
?!? You have a button for that?!?

I have one too, on the left side of my wireless mouse (at the thumb-tip). I like it lots, up until I try to use it on my desktop mouse or at work where there are no such wonders.

Also Opera's mouse gestures (click and drag to the left) are good for backing up too, except for one PC at work where it only has Chrome installed. Then I have to go to the effort of moving the mouse pointer to the menu bar and clicking on the back button

Personally I love Chrome, but then the side buttons on my mouse act as forward & back on any web browser, which is extremely quick & handy. :D

I heard, under BootCamp, it has a "three-fingered-salute" gesture for Windows as well

As I said earlier, the Apple Trackpad is the best on the market, it is certainly better and more usable than the one on my new Sony Vaio (which is still very good), but it still doesn't even come close to using a mouse for many tasks.

Well I will do before I buy, but I'm in absolutely no position to now, and way too busy for trips to Apple stores, unfortunately (even though we now have 2 here).
