A man has been jailed for six years after he was convicted of raping a 19-year-old drunken student he met at a nightclub.

Married father-of-one Fatih Kandemir, 26, who owns a kebab shop in Perranporth, near Truro in Cornwall was found guilty of rape following a two-day trial.

Yesterday he stood in the dock at Truro Crown Court after the jury took just 38 minutes to return a unanimous verdict.

The court had heard how he met his victim at the Corn Exchange nightclub in Camborne last November and afterwards offered her a lift home in his car.

Kandemir and the girl were not known to each other.

After the attack he dumped the terrified teenager and she ran towards some builders for help.

Mr Justice Royce told Kandemir: "You took advantage of that young girl who was clearly hopelessly drunk, as you must have appreciated.

"She was in no fit state properly to resist or to consent to what you decided to do. You turned her out of your car without her leggings, thong, handbag or phone.

"The description of her by the builders to whom she went for help is a very disturbing one."

Kandemir, who the court heard was of previous good character, had denied rape.

During the trial he claimed he had talked and danced with the girl and she had accepted his offer of a lift home.

He said the girl made the first move and although she was drunk, sex was consensual. Kandemir said afterwards the girl was hungry and wanted something to eat so he had driven her to his shop, but it was shut. He said: "I drove her back to Camborne and she asked to be dropped by Tesco's roundabout.

"I returned home to my wife. Everything that happened was with her consent."

Under cross-examination by prosecutor Iain Leadbetter, Kandemir denied he went to the club to watch people who drank far too much and insisted he had not targeted the girl.

Mr Leadbetter said: "You dumped her.

"You watched her in the club, saw that she was drunk and was 'easy meat' for you.

"You followed her, took her to your car and satisfied yourself in the most squalid fashion. You thought you could have your way with her and that she would remember nothing."

Mr Justice Royce ordered Kandemir to sign the sex offender register for the rest of his life.

After the case Detective Sergeant Dave Ford said: "The prosecution of Kandemir resulted from a detailed police enquiry and we welcome the jury's verdict.

"This was an extremely unpleasant attack on a young woman who had been enjoying a night out.

"We would like to thank the many witnesses who came forward to help the police."

For someone to prey on drunk girls like this is appalling. The problem is that many drunk girls are up for fun, but that is not an excuse for this. It will have an appalling impact on her and so life on the sex offenders register is appropriate.

Ok, rape is never good.

But I think you'll find I mentioned this very establishment the other day. No wonder they called it the Groin Exchange.

Some bits of my county are just as [LIFTED] up as The Bay

Yes but many clubs are like that. Still does not justify rape. A person has a right to say no. Targetting particularly drunk women is not a good thing. It is good that there were so many witnesses.

I have to say, in my book owning a kebab shop doesn't qualify you for the title 'businessman'. In his case however, any of the titles I could come up with would be unprintable.
