The Justice Departrment also clones some of the more successful judges. There have been a couple of Dredd clones kicking around as well, with Judge Rico being the most recently appearing one. 2000 AD has just finished a year long story - Dredd had championed mutant rights, and muties were allowed to live in MC1 with full citizen rights. A change of chief judge (TV friendly Judge Francisco), who was injured and manipulated from behind the scenes by his proxy to expel mutants who would not be sterilised lead to Dredd being exiled to the badlands, patrolling the new mutant townships with a bunch of rookies and malcontents. He was recently returned to MC1 to investigate the attempt on Francisco’s life and uncovered the plot by a number of corrupt high ranking judges. Dredd is back in MC1, bringing the law to the streets with a recovering and Chief Judge Francisco. It’s been a pretty complex story. The period of exile was pretty much a Long Walk for him, despite it not being officially that. The same theme of Dredd’s age cropped up again - Dredd was deemed old fashioned and out of touch.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Some shots of cars for the film. I’m getting less convinced now. The vehicles the Justice Department use in MC1 hare monstrous affairs with big fat wheels and heavy armour. http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/12/06/ ... dredd-set/

Paul, I saw a shot of him in the Dredd suit and helmet and he doesn't fit it quite right, in my opinion. Mark

He’s too small. Dredd is a man-mountain.

Nope. How about Ron Perlman? He must be up there in the chin stakes.

Really, the actor for Dredd should never be known.

The first thing I thought when I saw the earlier pic of Urban as Dredd was that the design of the helmet was very similar to the comic but the rest of the uniform looks like Mad Max. The shots of the vehicles seem to confirm that the Mad Max aesthetic is what they're going for and they must be setting it only a relatively short time in the future.

You’ll have to dig out the Origins story that 2000AD ran a year or so ago - traced Dredd from a rookie through the formations of the Mega Cities. It seemed odd as I thought that MC1 had been around a lot longer than Dredd has been - but it seems that the growth of the two are linked.

Mmm...
The actor playing Dredd needs to have oodles of anger, dark gravitas and the ability to "loom".
My thoughts so far are Daniel Day Lewis, Josh Brolin or, at a stretch, a "Reign of Fire"-esque Matthew McConaughey.
[Edit:] How about Javier Bardem?

The cars in those pics reminded me more of 'Robocop Detroit' than MC1

An excellent choice even though he'd have to be dubbed. I re-watched the Stallone film not too long ago. They did get the look of Dredd and MC1 reasonably accuratelyl as well as the Angel Gang; it's just a shame that Fergie was featured so heavily as he must be one of the most grating characters ever put on film.
