I've got a solution to this.
Someone should do a better job of slashing his throat before he gets to take it to court.
Scumbag.

will claim the service has failed in its duty of care towards him.

Technically it might be the case, but there may be other factors such as he started a fight which would completely nullify his claim. Though it could be meaningless for him as it is unlikely that he will ever get out and there could be financial claims against him that could take the money off him.

I actually think that if this bloke is so miserable that he should be kept alive...

And tbh, the prison service has put us in the sh1tty position of potentially handing the scumbag money. He's probably doing it out of spite if nothing else. Maybe he's hoping to enrage the other prisoners further so they'll end him

A question occurs : If he gets the money, what is he going to do with it? He's in prison and likely to be there for a very long time.

That's what I meant with the spite bit, though I should have made that clearer... maybe he's hoping to earn interest on it. And even that's doomed to failure

He'll no doubt enjoy spending it when he is released.

For all those who think killing people like Huntley is a great idea, how would you feel if they were in fact killed because prisoner officers did not act, and it later transpired they were innocent?

I read in the Sunday Times today that the Ministry of Justice is considering settling the case, thus they must have something they don't want revealed in open court.

I am not in favour of the death penalty because far too many innocent people will be executed. It is the sociopath and the criminal who is least likely to get executed because they would not fall into the traps that innocent people fall into when questioned. Huntley will never get out and so it is an irrelevance how he would spend it. A chunk will be taken by the lawyers and legal aid will be reimbursed so the net amount will be less than imagined and then it may not be paid to him because of potential civil legal action against him.

Or they have done a cost analysis of the problem and come up with the same response many insurance companies come to. That is it's easier and cheaper to pay up rather than go to court. Huntly has no money or assets so the state will be funding the case to sue itself and by all accounts could cost a couple of hundred thousand pounds!! All for maybe a ten grand payout.

Personally all he deserves is the death sentence but as we aren't allowed to do :(

It will probably cost less than £50 000 including the payout.
