That is irrelevant. They do not discount any mobile they get the cost back through the call package. You may pay less upfront for the phone but you pay more for the contract. They make a profit on every phone if you take the contract and never go over your call or text allowance. Some are more profitable but they make a profit on all the phones even the free ones, because they get a higher ongoing income to offset the free phone cross subsidy.

But do they? See Koli's figures earlier, you always get a better deal because they subsidise the handset for you. You can either view the loss to the network as a discount applied to the handset or to the minutes/texts allowance, but either way the network is worse off than if you go SIM only.

Linux is right Koli's figures do point that way. Although if I wanted a similar amount of minutes etc. I'd have to spend more than £30/mth on a regular contract. As it is, I'm on a £30/mth SIM only with £5 loyalty discount. So the difference for me is less pronounced. But with the Droids atm it seems you're increasingly better off with a SIM free handset in terms of OS updates and other goodies. Will be interesting to see what happens in Q4. I can wait.....

Yes but that is comparing a Sim only deal with contracts. You could pay full price for the phone and still get a better deal with the contract over the sim only deal, because they know that they will get £X per month out of you. If you have a PAYG option they might take that same amount in a couple of months. This is more of how they price contract versus PAYG. It is a discriminatory pricing against PAYG. You will always get a better deal with contract. They have higher margins on PAYG even though there are no risks.

They have said they'll put them back in a later update. I don't care about that as I've set my phone not to update automatically. I'll get the first release, but not the second. Android 2.2, here I come.
