I agree, except for some parts of D. Huge marketing departments (and parts of my concious and subconscious mind) are run on precisely that - judgements about people based on brand choices.

I stand by what I said.

Marketing is the systematic transmission of lies and half-truths, the Brand a parasite that feeds off low self-esteem and Fashion the intended sniping duck-hunt madness that results.

I understand how deeply ingrained this "take, make and throw away" mentality is, but people really need to look behind the curtain and see the Wizard for what he is.

Branding and marketing aren't the same thing. Also, neither HAVE to be used to shift product for the sake of pure profit. It just happens that most people worship money. We're all guilty of it on some level, no matter how hard you try not to be. To be utterly and truly rid of that mentality, you'd have to go live in a hut in the third world to rid yourself of societal pressures/advertising/media etc.

Whilst I agree people should look behind the curtain, they largely don't. This enables me to make judgements which are usually correct. The same is true for marketing departments the world over. Just because something is "wrong", doesn't mean the vast majority of people don't partake.

There is very little difference between the OSes now. They are all much more secure than the older OSes, OSX still has yet to be compromised in the wild, and I think that also applies to Windows 7 and linux is very secure as well. They all have their pros and cons and they are all able to talk to each other thanks to common standards. If you are technically minded Linux is the best option, if you want games Windows, and if you want colouring OSX is supreme. ;)

You really can't simplify the world like this. It just doesn't work like that.

I use macs and for me they do all that I want. I do not need to tinker and am not fussed about playing games so Macs suit me. I do not do any colouring! :D

In which case they're probably the best for you.

However, it's a bit of a leap from that statement to this:

... which isn't really true a lot of the time.

Aye. I mean, this whole company should be running Linux, and we need to port all the industry-standard software too...

Yes but they are all very similar in capability. Though my last experience of linux was not an easy install. You need to be fairly technical to set it up. With my memory it was a tough install. Windows is easier because of my past experience. OSX is very simply to use so I was able to switch even with my memory problems. Once up and running you do not need to know how to do the tinkering. Macs are better at that.

I agree with that. My mother never got on with Windows, but loved KDE on Linux. It just worked for her.

I have friends and family which just can't understand OS X. My girlfriend can just about check her webmail using Windows, but couldn't do that with OS X, because somebody showed her which icon to click in WIndows to "start the Email" - she has Yahoo! Webmail and uses Firefox to read it.

Her daughters switched to OS X with little or no problems, apart from Adium not being a reliable ICQ client.
