Quote:
People dependent on drugs and alcohol who refuse treatment could have their welfare benefits withdrawn under plans being considered by the Home Office.

The idea is in a consultation paper on the government's drug strategy for England, Wales and Scotland.

The proposals also suggest that addicts on benefits should not be required to seek work while receiving treatment.

Some experts have suggested that withdrawing benefits could lead addicts into crime and prostitution.

There must be hundreds of thousands of alcoholics on benefit. Then what about tobacco? Technically that is a drug.

Yup but smokers don't trash up places or commit crime because of it and there is a net benefit in funding for the NHS from its sale.

I guess technically everything is a "drug".

I'm sure there are many drug addicts and alcoholics who end up on benefits but I wonder how many turn to drink and drugs after going onto benefit?

Probably a fair percentage. Though many may have lost their jobs through their drinking habits.

Thats the problem with addiction it is not a life choice after they are addicted.

Also do you honestly believe that they will cut taxes that affect you? This government will cut inheritance taxes first. For the super rich first.
