Here's a sign that Apple is not only thinking seriously about touchscreen iMacs, but that it has a rather smarter view of the technology than its rivals.

So it'll cost the earth and look too fashionable, but it's better than any other touchscreen desktop I've seen...

That could make many tasks very easy to do by hand. It could make tablets like the Wacom 21UX almost redundant.

Especially if one could use some sort of pen or something to get extra precision...

Perfect for building the bridge of a Constitution class starship, however.

You know what, my Hyundai 17" monitor from 2004 bends in exactly the same way - but isn't a touchscreen.

Unless they have found a self cleaning surface, which automatically removes the smudges, as fast as the user puts them on the surface, I'm not really interested. Touchscreen phones work, because you can wipe them on your shirt every minute or so, try doing that with a 27" display!

Exactly my thought. You'd have to have some sort of windscreen wiper on it  .

I dont think a touchscreen for controlling an OS would have the levels of pressure and control to replace a good quality graphics tablet.

If they did that you would save more than £1800 on that alone.

Why not? The touch screen itself has to be up to a certain level of resolution, the software takes it from there. The OS wouldn't need the same levels of input sensitivity as the graphics app.

Clever stuff aside, that just seems to be another ridiculous thing that you can patent.

I didnt mean it cant. What I meant is that if the touchscreen is only as complex as needed (i.e. control the OS) I dont think it could/would be as accurate as a dedicated tablet with 1000's of levels of pen pressure, etc.

I guess it depends how much tech they put into it.

I'd hope a concept like this would be good enough to start with - knowing Apple, the first revision will get the early adopters onside, but the successive one's will be the one you want.

But if tablets can do it, then what is to stop a desktop screen from doing the same? Will it come with an iPen? for drawing?
