Won't you have to install Windows 7 (or Vista if you wanna muck around with it) as XP won't recognise the SSD? Or is there a way round that now? :?

It's a standard 2.5" SATA drive and XP will recognise it as such; it just happens to not have a disk in.

The problem with XP is that it's not optimised to keep write cycles down, so it can wear out the flash unless you do quite a bit of tweaking. However, there's lots of info on what to do and how so it's not really a huge problem. I've had it on my XP desktop so I know it works, and I've got the utility to trim it.

Thanks for that, what's the utility to trim it?

Have a look here - Trusted Review

Like Tom I also brought a Samsung NC10 for her-in-doors, I looked far and wide for reviews and found this to be the better site.

Dear All,
Thanks for all the advice. I finaly decided on a refurbished Acer 751, the larger screen makes all the difference.

Was in Liverpool over the week-end so went on a little Bank Holiday trip to Huddersfield to Laptops / Acer Direct.

Now just have to get the second batttery.

Again, thanks to everyone for the advice.

Cheers,

AtB

Give me a shout when it comes to buying the battery if you want, I should be able to point you in the right direction for cheap, amazing generic goodness if that's what you're after (the official Acer ones are ridiculous online) :)

PCernie,
Very interested in any pointers regarding the battery. Can we do this in the forum or should I drop you a PM?

Chat away in the forum in case it's of any use to someone else I spose :)

To cut a long story short, I went here:

http://www.kingbattery.co.uk/advanced_s ... =1&x=0&y=0

The batteries for the different Acer Aspire models all seem to be much of a muchness, but do check and see if either your netbook model number or the battery model number shows up there.

I went for the 9-cell job, simply because I rarely take the netbook away from home anyway, but I utterly detest wires ;)

£37.92 delivered from those nice folks in China (so a slightly longer wait involved), though the site has a UK address... it's up to you really ;) , the way I was looking at it, either Paypal or my credit card company should cover me if it was dodgy.

The battery itself adds a fair bit of weight, as you'd imagine being 9-cell (smaller capacities are available), but it's not going to break your back or your wrist carrying it! Personally I like this if I'm using the netbook on my lap as it keeps the whole thing steadier.

Also, with the slight size issue and to keep with the shape of the overall Aspire design, the battery elevates the netbook slightly. This is just the undercurve of the battery and the attached rubber feet, and raises the netbook by just under an inch at the back and obviously elevates the keyboard, but not in a 'Are you kidding me?' way, so don't worry :)

I'm just telling you everything I can here, the extended battery is no trouble at all, if it sounds terrible it really isn't!

I get over 10hrs with it using Wi-Fi with the screen brightened beyond the usual power-saving bit, and it doesn't heat up much or anything like that.
