The GPS coordinates will be correct. It's the maps that need updating; even the good old paper maps will now be wrong.

I'd imagine that accurate cartography is fairly low on the list of '[LIFTED] that needs sorting' in Christchurch, however.

All the land based GPS markers will have moved, so that doesn't have a relationship with GPS co-ordinates?

This is not something I've ever thought about. I guess they need fixed reference points? Fixed points on a planet where all the plates keep shifting is a rather impermanent concept!

I though all coordinates were base on the central meridian than runs through Greenwich, ie Zero degrees.

It also depends on the direction of the movement.

A 7.1 quake? Any idea what that is on the Richter scale? I don't uderstand the new scale, other than an earthquake seems to be a couple of points higher on this new scale...
