Just realised that I was planning on doing this in a month or so's time. However I won't be on a budget set of tickets at current rate of progress, and I'll be exiting the train late at night at a station with a non-manned exit.

Wasn't that always said to be Mussolini, rather than the Nazis?

I saw the QI when that was mentioned and it was just one specific train that he got to run on time. :P

"Heavily discounted tickets" really riles me. The whole [LIFTED] service is "heavily discounted" by UK taxpayers! Can anyone say "revenue support", or "subsidy"?

These private rail operators offer no discernible benefit to passengers or taxpayers, and it's about time the whole lot was taken back into public hands. One set of rules, one "peak time" throughout the network and none of this alighting early [LIFTED] and much, much cheaper fares. Hell, maybe we could treat passengers as human beings instead of cattle too.

A lot of the time the single fare is almost the same as a return so it makes sense to buy one even if it is a one way trip.
I've bought a return flight before, as it was £5 cheaper than just a single ticket on the out bound flight. Madness.

As soon as I can swing it, I'm off.

I've been shat on too many times.

This place can bite my rusty metal ar*e.

Compared to some other "western" countries, England is a haven. For example, Australia might have better weather, but they have some really funny ideas about how much freedom adults should enjoy (e.g. no 18-rated games).

Add in the Great Australian Firewall. It makes our nanny state look positively laid back.

Sydney airport (owned by the Maquarie Bank - AKA The Millionaire Factory) charges taxis and rail passengers extra just for getting to the airport. IIRC it costs roughly twice as much to travel by rail from the city to the aiport than it does to the next stop after the aiport.

On one particularly tight day I got the bus as far as I could and then walked the remainder, large suitcase, backpack and another bag in tow.
