Which stupid [lifted] wit dreamt that one up. The FRESH HOME GROWN fruit and veg are probably far better for them than anything bought from a supermarket.

In fact I do not think that I have seen a supermarket with chillers for vegetables either. Herbs maybe and speciality vegetables from around the world. Potatoes only need some where cool and dark nothing more. Same for onions. I would imagine allotment grown veg is healthier because they have not been sprayed with pesticides.

Its nothing to do with the HSE but EC regulations/directives such labelling (2000/13) and food and hygiene(178:2002, 582:2004, 583:2004). Just bad reporting by the newspaper looking to attack "stupid" 'ealth n saftey,

Maybe so but why don't they attack the EU especially considering how xenophobic they can be. Labelling should not be a problem. <Allotment> hygiene <please wash> now what is the problem with that?

no problem until some one suffers from E Coli, listeriosis, salmonella, clostridium. botulinum poisoning. Or someone with an allergy consumes something that has been contaminated. By the way labeling can be a huge problem, just ask any food producer.

Also, why do supermarkets sell eggs at room temperature and then tell you to store them in the fridge?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I think that the public would find it hard to tell what caused them any food poisoning. As for allergies, just put on the potatoes may contain nuts!!!! Fresh veg from an allotment might actually be a lot healthier than the stuff anyone gets from the supermarket.

Shops selling food have to conform to the appropriate legislation concerning food safety and the only defense they have is due diligence. Without complying to the legislation they are open to huge fines and possibly prison terms. As for the public finding it hard to tell what caused them food poisoning, if there is an outbreak they do try and trace back to the source and some types of food poisoning are extremely dangerous and can be life threatening. Ask a doctor about Listeriosis. There are other allergens apart from nuts such as the innocent Celery

I can see that some forms of listeria are dangerous but many allergies are an over reaction to a sterile environment. I will not necessarily blame the store. There should be an element of personal responsibility as well.

if the food is not correctly labelled as having a sensitizer or allergen in it then then the produce/store is wholly responsible as the consumer could not of made an informed choice.

Yes but what additional labelling would an organic potato need?
