Apple will end its free iPhone case giveaway at the end of September, saying the antenna problem was smaller than the company originally thought.

However, Apple said it will to continue to provide a free case to the "small percentage of iPhone 4 users" who need one.

I think that it was overblown, and the provision of the cases will solve the problem for the everyone else.

When Apple announced the free case giveaway it was always running until the end of this month - at least that's what it said in the App. you had to download to get the free case.
As Amnesia says, I too think it was a very overblown "problem". Despite some people here having suffered the reported problem I still think it was a very vocal minority that were kicking up a fuss.
Yes, an expensive bit of kit should just work (no pun intended), and yes, if it doesn't complain about it, but there was no need to complain in such a vocal and public manner, in my opinion.

Then again, if it wasn't for the screamers out there would I have a free case on my iPhone4? Probably not, so I guess I benefitted from the whole palaver.

I would have applied even if there was no problem. Though I am still waiting for the white one and it has not appeared.

I think the thing with the iPhone though is that it IS talked about a lot and regularily - whether that be for the good stuff or the bad. Look at the product launches, the marketing hype, the press coverage, even the threads created here. No other phone gets the same amount of coverage IMO. It only stands to reason then that if something does go wrong it will be publicised as much as the 'good' bits are too.

And that includes the anti-Apple brigade waiting for their opportunity to pounce.

Oh I think the "bad" gets more publicity than the "good", normally it's not as prominent as what happened with the iPhone4.
This is mainly due to the people that want something for nothing. In this case I think a lot of people that weren't particularly troubled by the signal loss issue saw the opportunity for a free case and started adding their voices to the cause.

There will always be people who will jump on a bandwagon if it involves a freebie of some sort. You did! ;)

I did not. In fact, I remember commenting on many occasions that I was indeed very happy with my iPhone4.
I got my free case simply by taking up the free offer. That's not jumping on a bandwagon.
