One of the Pope's senior advisers has pulled out of the papal visit to Britain, after reportedly saying the UK is a "Third World country" marked by "a new and aggressive atheism".

Hmmm…

Vatican sources said Cardinal Kasper was suffering from gout and had been advised by his doctors not to travel to the UK.

Gout brings to mind the life of over privileged excess, rich diet, little exercise as practiced in Regency times. You’d hardly expect someone who has taken an oath of poverty to be so afflicted. Yet here we are.

I've thought we were a third world country for years.
Does this mean I get to go and live in Italy now?

I've suffered from gout since I was 28. It has nothing to do with a rich diet or little exercise. I eat fairly healthily and at the time of my first attack, I was going to the gym 3 times a week.

I keep it under control by avoiding foods which are high in purine, and thus raise the lactic acid levels in my blood. That means no beef, no lamb, no duck, no goose, no spinach, no mushroom, no peas and no tomatoes.

Save for the mushrooms that would make me cry daily - you have my sympathies.

"a new and aggressive atheism"

Modern life's a bitch, isn't it?

Oh, and being part of the world's biggest paedo ring isn't helping your cause much I'd have thought...

Actually apart from Richard Dawkins every atheist I know is nothing like that. I have never been approached with the intention of converting to atheism, yet I have been approach a lot more times to become a Christian.

Does he think we're 3rd world because of our atheism, or it that a separate issue? Coming from an organisation that's only progression in the last century is to install electric lightbulbs and rape a few less children than they used to.....
