woman who died in web suicide pact with a stranger after being encouraged to kill herself by internet forum users

Read this earlier and it's been playing on my mind..... What are people’s thoughts?

Let them get on with it imo, but it is a bit odd...... normal reaction though about internet information.....

What kind of sick [LIFTED] encourages a stranger to commit suicide?

It was nice of them to post the warning messages on the windows of the car. At least it's not as messy as jumping off a cliff/in front of a train/car etc.

I find it all rather sad and an indictment of the society we live in that (from the ladies side) none of her family seem to have kept in regular contact with her and her neighbours also did nothing.

Perhaps if they had tried to be more engaging with her this might not have happened?

I found it rather more disturbing than normal, simply because of the blokes surname.

The key word here is 'sick', as in unwell.
These people aren't well. And as it's a mental illness, then will affect what they say and do with other people.
I don't doubt that there may be an element who deliberately goad others (hell, it's the internetz after all), but if you're suffering from depression to the point you're considering suicide then it may be 'nice' to have a place to discuss your plans with others who understand how you're feeling.

Yes, it's a shame. Pity they weren't able (or willing) to receive help from anyone else.

Why is wanting to commit suicide a mental illness? :?

It’s more likely to be a symptom of a mental illness than an illness in its own right.

Again, why? Surely it's possible to want to commit suicide without being declared nuts?

Isn't depression now classed as a mental illness?

Quote:
Miss Lee's MP called on the Government to campaign against suicide websites.

Brooks Newmark, Conservative MP for Braintree, Essex, said: 'We need to do far more to deal with these suicide websites which unfortunately lead to tragedies like this.

'It’s not a question of more regulation but of better regulation and also figuring out how we can close down websites such as these...

‘We call on the Government to monitor websites on which people can incite others to take their own lives. We also call for website hosts to direct people toward help.’

So it's up to the government to stop this and has nothing whatsoever to do with the shameful treatment of psychiatric problems by society as a whole?

Right...

Yes, yes it is. Suicide is often a symptom of depression. Insanity is something else entirely.

+1

If that's what they wanted to do, then that's what they wanted to do...
OK, the way they went about it wasn't very nice, but in the country if you said "Goodbye Dad, I'm off to kill myself" then you;d have police coming after you to stop it happening...

We can't make everyone happy, some people want to die and don't respond to therapy, even if one could rewire someone's brain it would no longer be them, so one has only saved the body and not the person...

These people wanted to die, they had planned it - you can see that from the signs...
If they went in peace then I'm happy for them, the real shame would have been if they had shown signs of struggling at the last minute.

in my old job when I worked for the forestry commission I heard tales of workers telling me about when they did warden duty for some recreational forestry areas, they found gassed dead bodys by suicide and hung people in the same area, so crazy. The wardens on duty actually got "used" to seeing this type of stuff, few times they've actually stopped suicide people gassing themselves

These people aren't well.

I'm talking about the people on the forums they visited who helped talk them into it.
