I have a couple of problems with my Apple TV:

1) It randomly turns itself on! I turn it off (stand-by) and leave it for a couple of days and then it will suddenly turn itself on, and stay on, until I put it back into stand-by mode.

2) In stand-by mode, it gets very hot! And the hard drive seems to be running... :?

The only way I've found to actually get it to "stand-by" is to yank the power cord! :?

Which version of the software are you running Dave?
re. standby mode - it was added in 2008. Should do what it says on the tin.

I'm looking about Dave, Apple's site says that even under standby, it will continue to do various things -
What happens to Apple TV in standby mode:

The hard drive spins down when not syncing or downloading content.
Video displays black even though video output remains active.
    Audio does not play.
Download of any content (rented or purchased) from the iTunes Store continues uninterrupted.
Apple TV continues to appear in the iTunes device list, allowing you to view synced content.
Network connections remain active and Apple TV continues to appear in the iTunes device list, allowing you to sync content.
    The fan continues to operate.
Note: If the Apple TV is in standby mode during a sync operation, content continues to write to the hard drive.

I'm guessing yours has Wifi - is it possible something on your network is waking it?

I guess yanking the plug, when it isn't in use is the only way then... :?

Could you get one of those remote control socket thingies?

It may seem lazy but it'll stop you wearing out the socket thru repeated mating cycles.
