Just had a phone call from 'Susan' (out of Mumbai, presumably) claiming to be from BT.
Apparently, as a result of an online survey, they knew we have computers in the house.
They had a great offer for us, as they could tell we have viruses.
“Oh really?”
*click*
“Hello sir, this is James, I am the supervisor. Have you noticed your computers becoming slower? There is a problem with where the computers are slowing down as the software keeps filling up your hard drive as you use the internet.”
“Oh, what like a virus?”
“No, not like a virus, sir, *becoming more and more angry* it's software that can copy itself and fill up your hard drive, like malware and spyware and adware”
“I see, and which operating system does this affect? Is it Apple Macs?”
”Sorry? I know you have up to date anti virus, but what we're offering is...”
“I should probably tell you now that I used to IT support for a university.”
*CLICK*

That last bit isn't a lie - I did. I looked after a Mac suite and helped clean Macro viruses off PCs in my first year.

Erm... mine says Wednesday 2341.

Have you got the correct time settings for Manchester? GMT+0 and DST in effect.

Interesting usually they say they're from Windows or Microsoft

I've just checked and your post was made at 5:09pm. My PC clock says it's now 17:11, which means you won't post your last comment for almost 12 hours...

Buying new graphics card to make my media center bluray capable only to find out my mother board is too old to support PCIe2.1.
Damnit!

You can use a PCIe 2 card in PCIe 1.1 slots. It's just a bandwith limit, but for media it should be enough.

Unfortunately, the machine wont even post with the card fitted .. nvidia 6150 board with ati 5450 card seems a no-no (i now discover). I presumed it was the PCIe spec but maybe not ..

Try seeing if there's a BIOS update for your motherboard which turns on PCIE 2 support... long shot but worth a try, will be on the manufacturer's website.

It's a chipset feature, so a BIOS update wouldn't work. I'm surprised it won't work in a 1.1 slot though.

The last BIOS update for my card was 2006  I knew it was an old board but even so .. TBH for a media center the board / processor combo has been fine, runs W7 ok, can play HD wmvs, mkvs etc.

Think it will struggle with Blu-ray however so wanted to give the processor a bit of help ..

Anyone got a more modern board / processor they want rid of? Needs to be matx. a 1st gen c2d would probably be fine (and cooler!).
(cheeky i know .. )

Rats.

Had a phone call calling off the interview I was going to have later. She wanted to be open and honest with me that the job was better suited to someone else already interviewed.

Still, we had a good long chat on the phone about things. There may be potential somewhere for me down the line, if I'm still available and if the company grows as they hope.

So, it looks like I'll be back at the Drudge Factory, sorting clothes in the run up to Christmas. :|
