My brother had a Mk IV Austin Healey Sprite (essentially the same as a MG Midget, but with squared off rear wheel arches), which had had its motor replaced with a 1300cc block, which really made it shift. I'm 6' and my brother about 6'6", so it was a funny site, seeing the pair of us racing around in that thing! With the top down, we both used to look over the top of the windscreen!

Bumping the topic, because we're on the verge of scrapping the Vectra now. I'll be making the calls tomorrow, I think, and hopefully it'll be taken away by a Vauxhall breakers so at least some of the remaining good parts can live on in other cars.

I've been looking at Octavia and Focus/Fiesta models on the Auto Trader web site. Of the two, the Skoda tends to be the cheaper, which means the Fords are holding their second-hand values quite well.

I recall mentioning I wasn't after a 4WD, but after the last couple of winters, I've been giving some serious consideration to a Series I or II Land Rover - especially if I can get one that hits the classic tax-exempt area.

Mmm. A spot over my budget - by about £30,000...

The regular Octy comes in 4x4 with the Haldex diff used in 4Mo and Quattro stable mates. No need to spend out on more expensive models.

Also, the Octy is considerably more car than than any Ford south of a Mondeo. No Ford holds it's money, but I would suggest that boggo Fords are more popular than boggo Octy's. Once you start looking at well specced dervs (which I assume you'll want) the tables will turn.

Budget?

Right now, <£1k.

Potentially, ±£3k.

As it stands, Best Beloved has accepted that I am looking at suitable alternatives. He's not keen on spending out on another car while the ickle Fiat is running, and I'm okay with that. So, for now, I'm monitoring the prices on various models so I know what's likely to be available when we get down to actually buying.

Another point is we're unlikely to be going through a main dealer. It's much more likely to be a used car place.

The Octavia uses the same four wheel drive system as the Volkswagen 4motion and Audi Quattro models.

I'm looking for a Freelander TD4 in that price range. They don't often come up at that price, but you occasionally see them.
