I've expected them to crop up in this thread for pages and pages.

Under the circumstances, I'm rather pleased that they haven't.

And I'm glad to read the good news, Ollie.

I SAID, I'M GLAD TO READ THE GOOD NEWS!

That's one of my favourite episodes. Isn't it the one where he won the bet on the horses and lost the money paying for the broken vase?

Right!

Been to the docs this morning. They can't see anything (still) which would cause this and so are referring me to an ENT specialist.

I hope he comes to a decision quicker than Treebeard though

Hear's hoping you get some good news for your birthday!

Don't stick the Twiglets in your ear. It won't help ;)

Just been to see the private consultant only to be told I more than likely have permanent hearing loss in my left ear.

It's either a fractured stapes or (more likely) the stapes has partial come away from the cochlea and the cochlea is leaking fluid causing the loss of sound.

It's like my ear is a speaker and the front round bit of the speaker is all bashed up with holes in. Because of that it can't vibrate the air properly and make a good sound. It's also why I can still hear loud noises but the louder they are the more distorted they get.
