EDIT - Can someone please try the demo and let me know what they think?

It seems over-hyped* in every way to me if the demo's anything to go by; the controls aren't the sort you'd want in a fast-paced firefight, the script and subsequent voice acting are woeful, and there's just nothing 'special' about any of it really :?

* I honestly can't understand the glowing previews of this - there's nothing even special about the graphics to my eyes.

Shinji Mikami has confirmed that a downloadable demo for his awesome-looking new shooter, Vanquish, will be available for both PS3 and 360 gamers on September 2.

Although exact regions were left unconfirmed, Mikami revealed that the demo will be entitled 'Velocity Attack' and will let gamers play through a prequel sequence and take on a boss named Argos (who presumably has very little to do with the running of a popular high street chain in UK). The demo will also sport two difficulty modes, casual and normal (the former of which has an auto-aim feature).

Mikami also revealed that a different demo, containing new levels and an appearance of a "surprising character", will be playable at the Tokyo Game Show later in September according to Andriasang translations of the GameSpot Japan report.

Described as 'Gears of War on crack', Vanquish is a mental, futuristic, third-person shooter with a familiar cover system and a kick-ass art style and it's by Resident Evil man Shinji Mikami. Sold yet?

Just check out these screens and trailer. It's out October 22.

I tried the demo and was left with mixed impression.

It's been touted as a Bayonetta style Gears of War. AKA, about fast paced intense action and skill with a scoring system to boot for replayability.

When i tried it out on the PS3 i found it to be in concept, everything they promised, but the execution wasn't amazing. As yous stated, the game script and voice acting is atrocious and the control were terrible.

So overall i wasn't exactly impressed, however i then remembered my hate for the Dualshock controller (which has to be the least ergonomic thing ever created that people still revere). I then mapped out what the controls would be on the 360 controller (with the triggers for aiming/shooting, shoulder bumpers for dash etc.) and it started to make much more sense.

However since my 360 is still fried and i don't have a job yet to earn the money to pay for another one, i'm yet to test out my hypothesis/theory/feeling.

Thanks for that, you do start to wonder when a game's getting raved about and you're just thinking, 'Er, what?'
