how long is it going to take for battery technology to come up with something that would enable us to have a colour Kindle?
The iPad battery lasts about 10 hours, so I'd suspect the technology is already there.
That may have something to do with the size and the weight of the ipad. Kindle is much smaller and lighter and you can't just pack it with massive batteries. Also LCD is not appropriate solution for Kindle...
But the iPad does so much more than a Kindle, so if it lasts that long on something which is used for more intensive tasks than having text on a screen, why isn't the kindle battery lasting longer?

Lasting longer than what? Kindle lasts 30 days, it is light and small.
Kindle 241g, ipad 440g.
Kindle is ebook reader, it is not supposed to do more. It has an internet browser and plays music. I don't need any of those two so for me it does more than I need.
Ipad is a tablet. They are different devices.

Oh right. I thought that was standby and actual use was greatly less than that. If it's 30 days in use then that's brilliant. (8+)

It could be 30 days solid use, depending on how you use it and provided the wireless is turned off.

The reason is simple; the e-paper screen needs zero power unless it's actually changing page. I read the battery lasts about 30,000 pages.

On the iPad, the screen probably accounts for over 90% of the power consumption.

Think I'm going to go for it, it's just a matter of when I order.

What are they like for reading in low light?

i.e. if I was reading in bed with just a side light?

I have some birthday money and I'm thinking of maybe getting one.

I am sure you can make you own conclusion.

Display doesn't emit any light whatsoever. It is like a very bright paper with a super sharp print. Can't really say more than that.

I think I will get one for the GF as an xmas present, I just need to time my purchase as I don’t want them to run out of stock again and I would imagine as we approach xmas they will start getting in sort supply.

I've had mine for a month now and I love it. I use it mainly on the Tube on a train. I downloaded free books from Amazon that I would have never picked up in a bookstore (e.g. Decameron from Jovanni Boccacio or Crime and punishment from Dostoyevskiy)

I took it with me on my holiday, transfered pdfs that I needed (diving computer manual, insurance policy details and terms etc.)
Screen is brilliant and battery lasts forever.

What else could you want from a ebook reader?

Have you go the 3G version koli? or isn’t it worth the extra £40?

That's one of the key things with e-ink:
  • It only uses power to update the screen, and the image is retained so it only needs to update it on "page-turns" or when scrolling etc.
  • Massively reduced glare compared to LED screens
If there was an reader with a colour e-ink display, with a book store that allows downloads to iPhone/iPad and this device, I'd certainly be interested. A colour would be very nice.

IIRC colour E-ink will be here by the end of the year or the beginning of next year.

I presumed it wouldn't be too far off. I guess the basis would be 3 or 4 stacked e-ink displays with filters/gels/coloured goo.
