I backup my sim to PC too. You can buy USB sim readers for not a lot of cash.

Can you do that in a format that works between differnt phones? eg Nokia -> PC -> HTC Android?

Of course not But you could sync with Outlook, that would work for contacts.

You don't even need Outlook.
