All rather vague. Will anyone worry?

I'm going to France in a couple of days.

My only worry is that the airport security will be slower than ever...

It is largely cosmetic. The numbers of arrests at airports before the flight is pathetic. Arrests after the flight are much higher. ;)

If we lock ourselves away at home, then the terrorists win.

Agreed. I do not think that the real personal risks are that high.

He was known as “vague Hague” during his time as Tory leader.

This is either a load of bollox or extremely bad "intelligence" work.

If there is a plot that you know about you certainly don't advertise the fact so that they then turn their attention to another plot which you know nothing about. That's just stupid.

Working on the basis that the security services aren't stupid, this must just be a paranoia measure and an attempt to make sure that the security services aren't hit by "austerity" measures.

Thinking about it, what practical measures are the public supposed to implement when they are being "extra vigilant"? Are we to walk around with our eyes wider or what?

Yes the austerity measures are probably a bigger factor. Though will things be any safer if we follow the guidelines. The statistical odds of being killed in an act of terrorism are extremely small. As Adiden has said wouldn't this be better being kept secret. I certainly do not need to know. It could be as simple as marking the foreign office website as take extra vigilance when in certain countries.

I'm going with the former.

The FCO advice has been getting more and more paranoid for years now. The fact that this even makes news is a laughably ludicrous effort to scare people about terrorism even more.

As a society, we have become easier to scare. Part of that is down to the USA being frightened. When the IRA was bombing mainland Britain, the USA wasn’t running scared at the thought that they would be a target - indeed, they were gleefully handing money to the IRA hand over fist to help them through the NORAID organisation. Now the boot is on the other foot, the security alerts have to escalated to keep them happy and feeling safe.

The only warnings travellers to the European Content are:

They don’t speak English

They drive on the other side of the road

It is funny, the USA warns about travelling to Gitmo-Nation East (the UK) and the UK warns about Europe...

Interestingly, the Americans labelled the warning as a "Mumbai-like attack"...

Some one will be wrong. ;)

If the attack is here, then our government will be wrong, if it is in Europe then the US will have been wrong.
