Microsoft has confirmed that Dead Space 2 prequel Dead Space Ignition will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace from October 13.

Dead Space Ignition takes place after the events of the first game and sees players attempting to quell a necromorph outbreak on a space installation known as 'The Sprawl'.

Ignition will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace for 400 MS Points, but EA has yet to provide a release date or price for the PSN version of the game.

News of the game's release came as Microsoft revealed the schedule for upcoming Xbox 360 downloadable content. Other highlights include Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I, and Gears of War 2 going digital.

Check out our interview with Visceral Games executive producer, Steve Papoutsis, who talks about Dead Space 2's introduction of a multiplayer mode and his future ambitions for the franchise.

Pre-order Dead Space 2, get Dead Space Ignition free

Customers who pre-order Dead Space 2 will get a free code to download Dead Space Ignition, the prologue to EA's upcoming sequel.

An interactive comic-style story featuring three hacking games, Dead Space Ignition will be available on October 13 as a free download to anyone that pre-orders Dead Space 2 at GAME or GameStation in the UK, and at "participating retailers" in the States.

It can also be purchased as a standalone game on October 12 for £4.99 from PSN, and the following day for 400 MS points on Xbox Live.

As well as revealing the events leading up to Dead Space 2, Ignition rewards players with unlocks including an exclusive Hacker suit which can be used by protagonist Isaac Clarke in the upcoming PS3, Xbox 360 and PC sequel, which is due for release in January 2011.

"Dead Space Ignition will show fans what happens in the hours leading up to the beginning of Dead Space 2 with gameplay that is fast-paced and accessible," said Steve Papoutsis, executive producer of the franchise. "It's a fun way to dig deeper into the fiction, while allowing core fans to give Isaac Clarke an edge in Dead Space 2."

Check out our recent interview with Papoutsis, in which he talks about Dead Space 2's introduction of a multiplayer mode and his future ambitions for the franchise.

Is it a PS3 game for me though? Some games I like to play upstairs on the PC, it's darker, there's only a blue glow from my keyboard and I can sit in the dark and crap myself. :D
