Morning all.

Started quite well, but now I'm in a grumpy mood. BBC News broke into (and didn't show the remainder of) Click - they seem to do this about once every two weeks at the moment - to announce that a British hostage in Afghanistan had been killed while the authorities were attempting a rescue. Now this is very sad and in fact reasonably newsworthy..... (and you know what's coming here) but

1) It happened hours ago anyway, so it's not as if it's something that happened 'live' that they needed to show happening
2) I'm fairly sure she'd still be dead regardless of whether they interrupted Click or not.

The most irritating part of it was the anchor announced a summary of the item (which took about 15 seconds), then passed over to their 'middle east correspondant', asking what else she had heard about the events that had happened 'just hours' before. The correspondant's answer? 'well, nothing I'm afraid'. They've cancelled a show which has actually quite a big audience just to make sure they were 'the first to bring you' a news story which in fact they knew next to nothing about.

Gah!

I wonder if they could/would sort it for the iPlayer version :?

I've found that playing the word game, (pick a category and you have to think of four words beginning with each letter of the alphabet) helps me get to sleep. I even introduced Mrs. V to the game, and she says it helps her as well... trust me, she's never awake past "M"!

I've never been able to drop off to sleep. I just can't do it. There are times when I will fall asleep fairly quickly, but other times the brain won't kick out of gear and I'll lay there wide awake. That's when I resort to the radio or the iPod. Most times it works, but it failed to last night for some reason.

I have tried various games and routines to help me drift away, but again, they sometimes work and sometimes not.

The only really reliable method I've found has been a glass or two of red wine of an evening, but since we've voluntarily been off the booze this year even that has fallen by the wayside.

While I'm not actually having to get up and go out to work at the moment, I can get away with dossing about during the day and having an early night to make up.

Have you tried milky hot chocolate? If I take a mug to bed with me that usually sends me off. Not much good if you don't like milk though.

I usually have the TV on a low volume and that helps me sleep too. Put it on a timer of course so it's not on all night - usually to 30 mins and I don't hear it go off....

When I was living on my own I always used to leave the radio on at night. In fairness I didn't have much trouble falling asleep back in those days, as I used to practically live at the pub! ;)

I need to crack out the Horlicks again, I think. That usually had a calming effect. I do try to avoid stimulants like chocolate, sweet stuff or coffee too late in the evening.

Horlicks was going to be my other suggestion. Hope you sleep better tonight.

Evening all,

the new job is very demanding, and a lot of fun. But very little time to surf the net. Proxy at work as well, so no commenting on PC Pro at the moment (3G over iPhone is also getting proxy errors... :? ).

I'm also having to work hard at home, so getting very little time on the forums in the evenings as well - I didn't even turn on my computer yesterday!

Noooooooooooooooo! Are you feeling OK Dave? Hope you don't get withdrawal symptoms. Glad you're enjoying the job and it's keeping you out of trouble. Sending lots of best wishes over the channel.
