I use credit cards wherever possible. It isolates you from potential fraud, eliminates the possibility of losing your wad through theft or accident, it's faster, more hygienic, more environmentally friendly and points make prizes.

My debit card I treat with extreme caution, because there's no "buffer" between that and my current account. I know too many people who've been left with empty bank accounts after paying for petrol. That can't happen with a credit card. The only places I uses debit are at a cash-point (reluctantly, serious danger of mugging), or certain on-line companies who I trust far more than that shifty bloke in the 7-11. I wouldn't even use the cash-point if the local pub would get with the program.

I only use cash where other forms of payment are impossible. It's inconvenient, dangerous, expensive, unhealthy, time consuming and archaic. It's infuriating being stuck behind some half-blind old dear counting out the pennies for over 9000 hours when a quick swipe of the card takes less than a nano-second, and handling filthy old notes makes me want to wretch

Personally, I'd like to see everyone chipped at birth so payments can be totally automated.

Under a tenner, cash (if I have it on me), otherwise I'll pay by card even if I have the cash. It's not easy to get hold of cash in the sticks, so if I can pay by card and keep the cash for a future emergency, I will.

I tend to carry very little cash with me. If I know I'm gonna need cash, eg to buy lunch a work, I withdraw the money at the weekend. If I decide I want go to the local chippy, again must have cash on me.

If expenditure is around £10 and over, I'll pay buy card as it means I can save cash for those places where I can't/won't use it. Generally speaking, I use Shell petrol stations and given their penchant for hiring untrustworthy staff who scan peoples' cards, I go to the cash point, withdraw £100 or so, pay for the petrol and the rest stays in my wallet.

There isn't any difference between a debit card and a credit card here - except the payment is taken at the end of the month, not immediately. The consumer has the right to book back any transfer on their bank account.

Money is easier and it isolates from potential fraud - if I give somebody a 50, they can't empty my bank account or run up a bill on my credit card...

If someone takes your 50 and fails to deliver the goods, it's very difficult to get it back. If someone steals your 50, it's very hard to get it back. If you lose your 50, it's very hard to get it back. If your 50 burns to ash, it's very hard to get it back.

With a credit card, one phone call gets it back.

A 50 also fails to deliver when something costs 51. What do you do; carry infinite cash on you, or is there a cash-point on every corner? My nearest one is over 2 hours walk away.

The resources used in a card transaction are insignificant.

The resources required to create cash from metal and paper and then transport it securely is quite staggering. The carbon footprint of your average pound coin is higher than that of your average human.

OK, I admit it, I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to money - I actually like the feeling of having some cash in my pocket, it makes me feel secure! I know, I'm likely in the minority here, but you know where you are with a few tenners stuffed in your wallet.

I realise it's impractical to carry round wads of cash though, so I do use the card for the weekly shop and on the high street (clothes, electrical stores etc) and generally anything over £20. Petrol is usually paid for in cash if possible, as I've heard too many horror stories about cards getting skimmed and cloned from petrol stations.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both cash and plastic, though, you just need to keep your wits about you really. A bit of common sense. Oh, and don't pay for £2 sandwiches on plastic!

The warranty and insurance are purchases over £50/100 and only with my other card, the Tesco one is for clubcard points, over £8 in 4 months just on petrol and little bits

Forgot to say before that I don't even have a bank account. No cards, cheques or internet banking. All my money goes in the local credit union.

Any large purchases I pay on invoice by bank transfer or if that's impossible, get one of my relatives to pay by card. Otherwise, cash.

If you saw me in real life you'd understand why I have no fears about carrying cash

Same here. It means I do not have to get any cash out of the bank too often.

I use cash for most things including weekly grocery shopping.

The simple reason is that if I draw out a certain amount of money at the beginning of the week, that's what I have to spend. When it's gone it's gone. In my experience of others who use cards almost exclusively, it becomes so much easier to overspend or buy on impulse when you're not handing anything over except a piece of plastic, which you then get back. Somehow it doesn't feel like real money.

True but I have a notice board on which I keep a list of all payments so can see if I have over spent.
