That one's so bad it's sheer quality

Let's face it - he is a pretty good example of American comic book artwork. He may be dreadful, but he is clearly the product of an entrenched style. People expert this kind if artwork, and sadly the majority of the pulp- like comics from the USA conform to this style of drawing a lot.

Dammit - saw this thread just after I posted in the books one.

Anyway, I've got a 1986 copy of the Dark Knight Returns. Just been through the first section - there seems to be a lot that I've missed in terms of backstory.

No no, far as I can tell, TDKR is a standalone story. It incorporates a few things that have gone before, but it isn't strictly canon*, so just go with the flow I spose

* Or even subsequently canon.

As long as you know the characters of Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Harvey Dent/Two Face and Oliver Queen/Green Arrow - along with the rest of the main cast - I think you'll have no problems. Frank Miller's style is very wordy and detailed but I don't think you need to know the history of the Batman in any more detail than the basics to enjoy the book. I didn't know that much and still loved Dark Knight Returns. I regard it on the same level as Watchmen and Alan Moore's Swamp Thing.

Yeah, it's a classic (and I must read it again, then start the sequel even though it gets slated).

Also worth reading are The Killing Joke, Long Halloween, and Dark Victory - all deal with Batman's early days, with Halloween providing some of the inspiration for Batman Begins

Oh, and Year One's good too

I liked the sequel...or thought I did. Looked it up on Wikipedia and couldn't make sense of the plot summary at all. I only remember bits of it so it can't have been that good after all. The Killing Joke is OK; great art but I found the story a bit weak. Possibly my expectations were too high. Will have to find my copy (wherever it is) and re-read it.

Have you read Judgement on Gotham? Or Kingdom Come?

None of the Dredd crossovers have really stuck in my mind (which isn't a good sign really), and the only thing I recall from Judgement was Bats getting handy with a metal fence

Not even the tremendous artwork? I went to a UKCAC convention around the time Judgement was published and they had an exhibition of the original artwork by Simon Bisley. One person bought all of the originals in one fell swoop for something like £60,000. A little out of my price range. I did go to the signing though.



I can't remember how long I queued for....days possibly.

Oh, the artwork's great, especially on Death, but the stories in that series just haven't been memorable for me... I believe it was the very first crossover?

THE CROW Will Not Fly With Stephen Norrington...

Relativity Media's re-adaptation of James O'Barr's THE CROW joins GHOST RIDER, FREDDY VS. JASON movies, and the CLASH OF THE TITANS remake as a project Stephen Norrington could've directed...but didn't. There are probably a few others, but these are the ones that popped to mind.

In THIS piece at Mania, Norrington reveals that he's no longer associated with THE CROW project because...

...an unnamed star had gotten involved with the movie. The star supposedly loved Norrington's vision and wanted to work with him, but then rejected the Norrington/Cave script and asked for a completely new take from a completely new writer.

"As I had gotten involved explicitly as a writer-director my exit was inevitable."



Norrington would not identify the star in question, but the overall tenor of his comments suggest he was not referring to Mark Wahlberg, who rumors say was offered the title role in the picture fairly recently (details HERE).

I'm a bit disappointed by this. I loved the style and energy of BLADE, and felt LXG possessed oodles of potential that was never fully realized for a variety of unfortunate reasons. To me, Norrington is one of those directors who is fully capable of, and just waiting to, knock one out of the park in a way that'll take our breath away. Hopefully he'll get a chancre to do just that...someday...

I think I'm gonna give up with the Batman gns; recently there's been a lot of nonsense like the above (cut and paste arcs with entire sections missing?!), and just books that were totally rubbish bar the artwork
