I like to think of myself as very green. I do see the merits of nuclear power but renewables should be given preference. There should be a high carbon tax to a level that will mean that renewables do not need any subsidy. The nuclear industry should pay a similar sum in the form of a decommissioning levy, as it will be the tax payer who ultimately picks up the tab for decommissioning the nuclear plants, especially if the companies deliberately underestimate the cost of removing the plants.

While I am all in favour of green technologies I am in favour of nuclear as it is the only low carbon generating capacity that you can guarantee to work when you need it and you will always need that guaranteed base load.

Unfortunately people will not accept – “Sorry Mrs Trellis you can’t listen t the radio it is not windy enough” (Or wet enough or the tides are not at the right time etc)

Most green energy is unreliable. Nuclear is the only reliable (and viable) carbon free option.
Personally I con't mind coal if there's carbon capture. They could pump the gas down old oil wells.

Yes but carbon capture needs to be secure, otherwise an escape will be as bad as doing nothing. Nuclear is not carbon neutral but just much lower in carbon use. Renewables can be reliable depending on the scale. If you cover the whole country then yes they are reliable to a much higher extent. It is rare that we have a day that becalms the whole country. Even so Nuclear and other methods could work.
