Government urges councils to stop giving tax breaks to Scientology

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/oc ... cientology

Quote:
In a statement to the Guardian, Pickles said he could not see why Scientology was being given privileged treatment by councils.

"Tolerance and freedom of expression are important British values, but this does not mean that the likes of Church of Scientology deserve favoured tax treatment over and above other business premises," he said.

"The Church of Scientology is not a registered charity, since the Charity Commission has ruled that it does not provide a public benefit. Nor are its premises a recognised place of worship

Well that should solve the problem. Take the difference out of the pockets of councillors.

Either that or remove all tax-breaks from all non-charitable organisations.

I don't see why any religion should get a tax break.

Edited to add: Either they should all get one, or none should; discrimination is always bad. Tax breaks should only be given to charitable organisations that act demonstrably in the public interest. Churches, temples or any other religious meeting place of any type shouldn't count unless that specific church/temple/etc. acts as a non-discriminatory public-interest body.

Simples.

In my opinion, religion is a sham, and Scientology is a sham religion.

I couldn't agree more.
