I have SP2 installed which has been available on TechNet and MSDN for a bit and it sppears to use less memory than SP1.
The reasons stated are improved implentation of Superfetch and less memory usage by sidebar and a few other programmes.

I'm assuming certified partner or above as he's got both (like myself)

Just MSDN not Technet. But my friend works in Server Support for a firm and he told me it was on Technet also.

Hi Gavonmatic

I m just curious as your comp spec list below your post says you already have 8gb ram. Leaves me wondering why you ask if any better.

Hi all

This may be a little off post but I have just upgraded my Vista Ultimate 64bit to 8GB ram.
Bios registers 8Gb installed and 8GB usable, Windows System page shows 8GB, but system information page shows installed physical memory as 8GB, but total physical memory as 4GB. If I just add 2GB so is 6GB install then system information shows only 2GB total memory. Seems any more than 4GB installed actually reduces usable memory.
Does this mean that I have wasted my money on memory for no benefit from the 4GB I had installed before?

Clive

Can you post a screen grab (use Snipping tool) of your task manager....like this (this was mine whilst transcoding a video).

You need to upload it to something like Photobucket or Flickr, then it'll give you a link to paste between the "Img" tags.

Just as another thought, I have install a 16GB SSD disk and set the page file to run on that only.
This has sped things up quite a bit as even if the system needs to use the page file the SSD is nearly as fast as the memory chips so no noticeable lag occurs

Hi monkeyphonix

Although unable to post my snippit of taskbar the taskbar says 'Total memory = 8189mb' o is seeing all 8Gb.
Seems only system Information is reporting lower Total memory.
Checked with my brother who also had Vista Ultimate 64bit and his also only says 4GB total memory in system information.
He has now install windows 7RC, now his system information read Total memory and installed memory as 8Gb.

Seems this is a bug in vista Ultimate which would only be resolved via a Microsoft patch.
Won't hold my breath though :)

A generalised word of warning here. I'm not a gamer or over-clocker, I simply "slam in the RAM".
I've recently bought a few "matched sets" of Corsair RAM and all have failed, as opposed to umpteen similar from Crucial which have all worked flawlessly often for many years. I don't know if this is just a "me" issue, but a 100% failure rate is pretty poor IMHO. My advice is now solidly "Buy Crucial" for your simple needs.

Hi all

Problem resolved now by installing window 7rc
Now system information shows installed and total memory as 8Gb and runs much faster.
Confirms to me problem is in Vista Ultimate.

Thanks everyone for all the help given even if did not resolve issue with Vista.

So no need to post any more suggestion except for other users benefit.

How odd. I've only ever used Corsair, starting with a matched pair of DDR 3200's, a matched pair of DDR2 800's 1x1gb, two matched pairs of 2x2gb and in systems I've built for people - no failures.

Incorrect voltage is a prime killer of RAM, so maybe it's the choice of motherboard or even PSU?
