Rather uncharacteristic.
I once had a courtesy car whilst mine was being serviced. It was a golf diesel. I was worried about the petrol/diesel mix up so much that I never 'forgot' it was a diesel, so come filling time filled it with diesel.

That wasn't the punchline I was expecting.

I thought that one couldn't go into the other because of nozzle shape or something?
Still not made the mistake myself yet, no doubt I will at some point in life though

Touch wood, I've never had a problem. I used to chop and change between petrol and diesel cars all the time. For a while I was driving up to 4 different cars a week, so I've always had to be pretty careful about it.

It is a lot worse doing it the other way diesel in petrol tank, easy to clean petrol oil is harder and if you run it the catalyst converter is gone as well.

Really? Diesel in a petrol engine - engine probably won't start because the diesel won't ignite properly off the spark. The engine will pump it through, but I'd be amazed if it burnt any. Petrol in a diesel engine - big problems! Petrol doesn't lubricate in the same way, doesn't compress the same way, and as a result can spectacularly bugger up your engine should it ignite under the compression. I've heard of heads being blown off.

yeah it ran like crap until but we are talking a car from pre 1996 , from what i remeber it was a xr21, it was shagged anyhow
i rekon one of the biggest problems with petrol in a modern diesel is the heat issue, modern diesels run a lot cooler, wouldnt like to see the result of that after a while

Had the car been almost like-for-like with my own car (same colour, 5dr, acceleration, etc maybe a GT170), then I would have more likely messed up.

No, it was the same car I've had for the last 4 years. Just a moment of going on automatic, I was thinking about everything I had to squeeze into my lunch hour - none of which got done! Girlfriend and her eldest daughter have been laughing at me! The biggest problem with modern cars is the particle filter on the diesels or the cat on unleaded. The wrong fuel sort will totally bugger them, which is very expensive - I think upgrading the Mondeo to use a particle filter cost over €600, on its own. add that to any engine damage and I would be looking at a very big bill...
