http://www.macgasm.net/2010/11/02/apple ... ket-share/ | | | | Quote: The days of Apple being the underdog are officially over. According the market research firm Strategy Analytics, the iPad captured 95% global tablet market share during Q3 2010. This huge market share isn’t too surprising, as the iPad was the first commercially-avaible tablet that was consumer-friendly. Windows-based tablets, while they have been around for years, have never really been too successful outside of a few niche markets. This is due to several reasons, not the least of which is that Windows simply isn’t touch friendly. Even with a stylus, it’s not a great experience. Apple learned from Microsoft’s shortcomings, using the iPhone OS — which was designed from the ground up to be touch-based — on the iPad. At this point, Windows-based tablets aren’t a threat to anyone. The tablet PC’s cousin — the netbook — has also suffered at the hands of the iPad. ChangeWave, another market research firm, has found that netbook demand has shrunk 80%. | | | | |

Very true. Some mac sites are appallingly sycophantic. This was a new site for me so I do not know about the rest of the site. I also placed it here in mac hardware rather because whether it is true or not it is mainly a mac hardware article.

To be fair there's not a great deal of choice in the tablet market with other brands and models only just coming into the market. I suspect Apple will still hold the majority in another 12 months time but It'll be interesting to see if it's still 95%.

It will drop, but I suspect that they will hold on to a majority slice for a while. By the time the Blackberry tablet appears, Apple will be on to iPad 2.

Yes it will drop but I suspect that it could be like the MP3 player market which is still dominated by the iPod even as the whole market is stagnating.

Considering the JooJoo was a complete failure and the Samsung Tab has only been out about 2 weeks, not really a surprise.

Yes but I think that the iPod is also cannibalising netbook sales as well.

There have been tablet PCs around for years though. All this is really saying that Apple have found a way to make tablets more popular.

I think tablets of old and newer consumer tablets (iPad, Streak, Galaxy Tab) are worlds apart tough in both form and function.

Don't forget the price difference.

I thought the iPad and the Galaxy tab were roughly the same price, unless you bought a Tab with a 2 year contract (in which case you ended up paying roughly the same money, just over a longer period of time)? <checks> Yep, pretty much. £549 for a Tab at Expansys whereas you can get a same capacity 3G iPad for £529. Bigger screen vs inbuilt camera, basically. Jon

I think (and I'm guessing) they mean the price difference between the newer pads and tabs and the older fully features laptop tablets.
