ye I was gonna mention the beetle

Of course, we all know it was not a Beetle, but a Volkswagen. The vehicle never carried "Beetle" as an official name throughout its long production run.

I'll get my anorak.

You should go to Austria on New Year's Eve.

Honestly, it looks like a fireworks safety advert gone bad.

It is exciting though, in a 'will I lose my eyesight or a limb' sort of way. :D

I've been in Naples on New Year's Eve and that was a real eye-opener. It is the only time of the year when the streets are not crammed with cars because of the damage they are liable to sustain. Fireworks (mostly of very dubious legality) are lit and thrown from rooftops and balconies into the streets below and they are mostly intended to be loud rather than pretty. As you might expect, the fireworks are handled in a very cavalier fashion. I watched one guy carrying a cardboard box full of 'bandolier' style fireworks while ash from his cigarette dropped into it.

It's actually celebrating the burning of him.

I thought he was hung, drawn and quatered.

Anyway I went down to the beach with a couple of people and got a good old fire going.

Says on Wiki he jumped and broke his neck before he was hung, drawn and quatered...

Ok, so over the weekend as I was going in and out, I kept thinking there was some kind of epic floating bonfire night thing going on in the bay. Apparently not....

Doh!

If I'd seen any huge explosions over the last week it would have been a nearby oil rig blowing up.

* Sigh *

My point was that part of the "celebrations" involve that of his death, signified by throwing a effigy of him on a fire. I wasn't meaning to allude to the actual demise of the man.

My bad, it eaily reads like that.

I've never seen the point of making a Guy (other than the fact it gives children something to do).
For me it's about bonfires, fireworks and a get-together.
When I was young I always looked forward to going to our family friends do. Everyone brought a box of fireworks so they lasted for ages. Nowadays I go to the big city display. It's awesome!
